It was Ginger who paused, ears alert, and changed direction with Ripper following shortly after which meant Kyla was following right after them. Whenever they veered off, it was always for a reason, so Kyla wasn't about to question it this time.

She turned the corner along with the two dogs who came to a halt a few feet away from a small child. Kyla stopped too and then looked around for his parents. Who would leave a kid by himself like this?

He looked up to see the dogs first and then Kyla.

"MOMMY!" John rushed toward her as fast as his little legs could take him, although his head seemed to be moving a head of the rest of his body, in that off kilter way toddlers tended to run.

When he got to her, he held up his arms, in a clear indication he wanted to be picked up.

Kyla's response was a stunned one. She stared at the little boy as he came running and she held out her hands as if by instinct, but she didn't move to pick him up. Instead, she just took his hands, awkwardly.

"...What?" Kyla looked at him as if she was expecting some more in-depth explanation. Obviously this kid was confused.
