Easter Dinner (Gathering style - tag Winchesters, Harvelles, and Singer)

Apr 24, 2011 13:07

Mary had spent much of Saturday prepping and baking food for Sunday and was up early today to get the rest of the food and decorations ready for dinner. It was Easter and traditionally they had a family dinner that was delicious, yes, but proper size for the three and a half mouths to feed. However, this Easter, Mary cooked like she was feeding an ( Read more... )

After the dinner, which she hoped was a success considering no one had complained much about the food, Mary found herself in the kitchen with a dish towel over her shoulder and a pile of plates to clean up. She wasn't planning on doing it all, certainly, but there were too many to just let them sit on the counter so she decided to do the plates and some cups, at least. That way if anyone wanted more dessert or a drink there would be something to put those things in or on.

She hummed softly to herself. It was strange to have grown boys, but in the end, it was nice to have her family together as they were tonight.

Ramona was having a little trouble just sitting still, and ended up wandering into the kitchen, feeling a bit unsure of herself in this particular situation. "Um..." She cleared her throat a little. "Can I help?"

Mary didn't really care that Ramona's hair wasn't any of the standard shades and, in truth, Sam had told her already that Ramona was very colourful, so Mary had been somewhat prepared. Not that it mattered since Mary liked the girl.

She greeted Ramona with a smile and nodded. "Sure. Want to wash or dry?"

Ramona's only other experience with meeting a guy's parents had been the Jewish boy she'd gone to a 6th grade dance with. Since Ramona was Catholic, that hadn't gone over all that well with his mom. Thankfully she highly doubted Mary start muttering in Yiddish or anything.

"I can dry," she offered--since Mary had already started washing.

Mary didn't know any Yiddish, so Ramona was safe.

She held out the dry dish towel that had been resting on her shoulder to Ramona and then went back to washing the plate in her hand.

"Ramona, right? Sam always smiles when he talks about you."

They might not have talked a lot, but Mary could tell that the few instances where Ramona was referenced, Sam was happy.

Ramona wasn't one to blush, so she was surprised to feel a little heat flood to her cheeks.

"He's a sweetheart," she replied with a little smile, rinsing the plate after Mary was through washing it and drying it off with the dish towel.

"He's been like that since he was born. Always a happy baby." Mary's smile was sincere, but somewhat sad. She didn't have a lot of stories to share with Ramona.

"It was nice of you to come. I know it was probably a little weird."

"Just a little." Ramona wasn't one to sugar-coat. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous."

Mary leaned toward Ramona a little with a conspiratory look and half whispered, "me too."

Not only with Ramona, but her sons too, and especially Sam who she had only know for six months prior.

"I hope we haven't scared you off." Mary joked with another smile as she passed another dish.

Ramona had to smile a little at that, her shoulders shaking in silent laughter. It just struck her as funny, because she'd tried to explain that very thing to Sam when he'd mentioned how nervous he was about his mother being here.

"Nah, I don't scare easy," she assured Mary, drying the dish she was passed and adding it to one of the stacks.

"Good." Mary liked Ramona. It was obvious that Ramona had a strong personality and that her heart was in the right place. Sam apparently had good taste in women.

"John might look like a grouch, but he's really a teddy bear. Just don't tell him a said that." Her eyes were warm and fond when she talked of her husband. He was a little more rough around the edges than she remembered him, but deep down he was the same John.

"The secret's safe with me," Ramona quipped with a little smile, She wasn't entirely sure Sam's dad cared much for her--or at least her hair--but that was fine. "They look a lot like him," she remarked. "Sam and Dean. Though Dean looks a little more like you."

"You think so?" Mary could see John in her boys, that was for sure, but she wasn't sure about herself. It always seemed to be the case for mothers, though, since her own mother had never seen herself in Mary even though Mary had.

"I hope that's a good thing," She joked.

"Yeah, I do. It's through the eyes, and the cheekbones. I, uh, I was an art major for a little while, so...faces, the structure, kind of stands out to me I guess."

She smiled a little and shrugged. "And they're both pretty hot, so, I'd say it's a good thing."

She laughed softly. "Well, Dean continues to tell me how good his genes are in that respect. But they get their charm from John."

Mary figured it might be hard for Ramona to believe that part, but John could be a little distant to strangers.

"They're certainly charming." Well, Dean thought he was charming, at least, and it was really Sam's cluelessness that was his charm, but still.
