Dark Thoughts on a Spring Evening (OTA)

Apr 23, 2011 04:05

Ruby had the Inferno closed down and locked up by 3:30am. It had been a good, busy night, but her dancers were such good workers that cleaning up had taken no time at all. She walked down the streets towards the hotel, but stopped before she got very far at all. She pivoted on her ankle and turned towards the Church and the cemetery. She walked ( Read more... )

Working at a night club meant late nights, and though Ramona was pretty used to it, that didn't mean she wasn't sleepy by the end of her shift. She shuffled her way down the street to make her way back home, yawning and rubbing her eyes, a little worried that if she tried to hop a subspace road she might tumble into the wrong hotel room by mistake, as tired as she was.

Still, tired as she was she didn't just keep walking when she saw a very distraught looking Ruby on the street, turning into one of the bars. "Hey," she called to get her attention, jogging a little to catch up to her. "Hey, what's wrong?"

Ruby started, turned to face the noise, and relaxed when she saw Ramona.

"Oh, hey," she said softly. "Didn't think anyone else was on the streets tonight. Just closed up?"

She knew she was rambling, but talking a lot about nothing was far easier than talking a little about something.

"I've just been thinking. Too restless to go home. Want to have a drink with me?"

"We just closed up. Friday nights are pretty swamped." And since she had tomorrow off she figured delaying the crash into bed wouldn't kill her, and she didn't believe for a second everything was just peachy. "Sure, what the hell, I could go for a beer."

"Yeah, they are for us too. Although Saturdays are worse. It's not in my nature to get worn out, but it does keep me busy - dancing along with managing everything doesn't give me a lot of free time. But I love it. Can't say that I don't."

When Ramona said she'd have a beer Ruby smiled.

"Thanks, great. It'll be nice not to have to drink alone. And you can catch me up on how things are going."

Ramona couldn't honestly say she loved her job--it was more just something to do that kept her in money--but it was nice that Ruby had something to do that she genuinely liked.

"I can?" she quipped, smiling a little as she followed Ruby into the bar. "I'm not sure I'm the best go to girl for village gossip."

Ruby quirked an eyebrow, half-grinning.

"I meant with you and Sam, of course. Village gossip doesn't interest me much. It's strange to be at such a disconnect from everyone I knew when I was alive."

She shrugged and slipped into the bar, taking a seat and ordering herself a beer.

"Have you ever visited the cemetery here?"

It was a random question, but Ramona had asked her what was wrong.

"Oh...we're good." She wasn't sure what else she should say, since she'd never talked to a boyfriend's ex about her relationship with him before.

Sitting down at the bar, she ordered a Blue Moon with a wedge of orange, propped her chin in her hand and raised an eyebrow at Ruby curiously. "No, I didn't even know there was one."

"You don't have to be uncomfortable talking to me about it. I know I'm the crazy psycho ex, but I'm not interested in Sam anymore. I mean it. No hard feelings."

Ruby had ordered a Harp. Nobody did beer like the Irish.

"Yeah. It's by the church, more or less. And I found my grave in it. My original grave."

"I know." She toyed with a loose string on the fingerless gloves she wore. "It's just not a situation I've ever been in before, I don't want to be an accidental bitch."

She supposed it made sense that the cemetery was by the church--she guessed she just didn't notice it when she was all confessy church girl that weird weekend. "From when you were human, you mean." Living with a hunter and dating another, it'd be hard not to osmose some of the demon stuff. "That's kinda weird, what would it be doing here?"

"Everybody's an accidental bitch once in a while. I've been a thousand times, usually not accidentally."

She took a sip of her beer.

"Yeah, from when I was human. A long time ago. And I don't know why it's here. Only that it can't mean anything good."

Ramona frowned a little, taking a long drink from the bottle the barkeep set in front of her before poking the orange wedge down the neck. "That must be kind of depressing. Having your own grave here."

"Yeah. And trying to figure out what it means. Figures that I fall in love, for real, the first time in six hundred years and then I find out I have to die soon. Cause that's what I assume it means."

"Ruby, don't take this the wrong way, but aren't you already dead, you know, back home?" Ramona pointed out as gently as she could manage. "I don't think the village whatever brought you here just to kill you in the mystery pocket dimension of lesson learning. Maybe it's something that just happens here, have you asked around?"

Ruby hesitated for a moment.

"Yeah. I mean, I am dead back home. But it feels like I was given a second chance and then they're taking that away too. Even though I've been good."

She shrugged.

"I don't know who else this has happened to. I mean, it sounds a little strange, don't you think?"

"'Strange' is kind of a relative term here," Ramona pointed out, taking a slow, thoughtful sip from her bottle. "Maybe it's not that you're gonna die--again. Maybe it's, like, part of your lesson."

"Part of my lesson? Yeah, maybe. Although I'll tell you, I'm getting pretty tired of 'lessons.'"
