After his usual morning swim, Julian had showered and gotten ready for work, then headed out. Since the electronic repair shop opened far earlier than Veritas, Rachel was already gone, so she wasn't there to remark on the humming. He didn't much remark on it either. It wasn't like it struck him as odd. He curtailed it a bit in the cafe when he stopped in for coffee and bagels, with juice for Rachel, then started it up again as he made his way toward her work.
He'd drop off what was more a mid-morning snack probably for her than breakfast, check on how she was doing, then work on getting the bar opened for any lunch or afternoon business. Spring was finally starting to make itself felt. He didn't think it would be quite warm enough for people to take advantage of the patio, but maybe if he started a fire in the firepit, they'd head that way by evening time. There was a jazz band tonight, and he thought it looked like the start to a beautiful weekend.
He didn't notice when the humming started up again.

It wasn't that Adam meant to be late for class. He was always punctual, really. But there was a kitten in a tree, and he had to stop to rescue it. When he finally did make it, he looked over the day's assignment with a bit of bemusement. His notes...didn't make sense, so he tossed them out, giving his class a smile that none of them found too off, though it faded quickly into something far more serious.
"Your assignment for today was to write essays based on these two quotes by Machiavelli: 'No enterprise is more likely to succeed than one concealed from the enemy until it is ripe for execution' and 'From this arises the question whether it is better to be loved rather than feared, or feared rather than loved. It might perhaps be answered that we should wish to be both: but since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved.' I can't imagine that anyone would support such statements, but I'll be interested to read your essays. For now, though, let's discuss how such a manner of running a government--or one's life--would breed distrust and problems on personal, national and international levels." He caught the startled and somewhat shocked gaze staring back at him, and frowned a little. "Angela, why don't you start?"
The girl choked on her water, coughing a lot. Maybe if he could instill the lesson now, there'd be some hope for all their futures back home?
The afternoon went on, and he left school, headed back toward the hotel, planning a detour by the soda shop for some ice cream.
"Seriously?" Angela caught up to him. "What the hell was that?"
"They were valid questions," he said, giving her a bit of a frown.
Angela snorted. "I don't know what someone put in your coffee this morning, but the day you toss Machiavelli out the window is the day I become a nun. Which would be hell on your sex life, what with the whole blinking Peter out of existence bit." She flashed him an insolent smirk, and turned off to head toward the roller rink.
He really was going to have to see what he could do to try and get her set on the right path.
