L was perched in one of the chairs in the hotel lobby typing on his computer, though it didn't seem he was paying much attention to the screen. He had been spending a lot of time after Misa's visit considering his options. There were a few things that were quite clear to him. The most important of which was that Light would do what he could to keep Misa on his side and that there was very little that would turn her from her obsession. It was also evident that while it didn't seem they had used the Death Note it was only a matter of time until they did. Of course, it was entirely possible that neither of them had access to either of their books here, but since there was no proof of that he felt it safer to believe there was at least one Death Note in the village.
He did also consider the possibility this place might be interfering with the way the Death Note worked, but he couldn't be sure of that unless he managed to get his hands on one, or it became obvious that it was in use, so he felt safe in coming to the conclusion that for some reason the two hadn't acted yet. Therefore, he must prove that there was a Death Note in the village, and must destroy it or at the very least put it somewhere that no one could use it, or he must find a way to keep Misa and Light from working together.
Of course, this was more easily said than done. L knew all too well that Misa wouldn't just give up on Light, especially if he gave her no reason too, and there was no way to tell exactly how Light felt about her or what exactly was really happening between them. This situation called for a third variable. Some part of the equation that would have the effect of either distracting Light from her, turning Misa against Light (which he considered quite difficult, but perhaps necessary at this point), or at the very least forcing their hands so that he had the undeniable proof he hadn't been able to get before his death.
There was one option that seemed the most logical course of action. He had spent these last weeks very carefully considering the best way to implement it. He must give Light no reason to suspect him since he had no desire for Light to act on his earlier thinly veiled threats, but he must expect that Light would be suspicious, at least at first. If he pretended to lower his guard slightly Light might make the slip he had been waiting for. He would have to make sure Misa didn't find out directly from him though, and he would also have to know what Light was telling her exactly. He had no guarantees of what the final outcome would be so he must be prepared for everything, but he felt relieved now that he had a plan at last. All he had to do was take the first step and it would be underway.
