It was nearly dusk when he made it out to the basketball court. Babe had the day off, and shooting a few hoops seemed like fun. There were a couple of bottles of beer sitting at the edge of the court in a cooler, and all he needed was someone to play with ( Read more... )

"I'd join you," Nix said in a friendly tone from his spot on a nearby picnic bench, "but I think you've got the exercise covered." He toasted him with his flask before taking a drink, capping it, and tucking it away again.

"You know it's better with more than one person playing, right Captain?" Babe grabbed the ball before it could bounce away, walking over to where the other man was. "I saw you were here. That you met Zenon."

"Right," he said with a nod, "Zenon." He enunciated the name, trying it on and finding it very strange. "Sweet girl."

"She is," he grinned, reaching down to grab one of the beers he'd brought. "Really likes paratroopers. I think she thought it was the best birthday ever, that you got here on it."

"Been a while since practice back at the base." He and Compton had captained the battalion basketball team, it seemed like years ago.

"It really has," he scooped up the ball and resisted the urge to salute. This was casual, this, just a couple of guys out at the court, even if one was Maj- Captain Winters. "You want to play, Sir?"

Alright, so some habits die hard.

"If you're looking for someone to play with." He nodded.

"Course, I think you outclass me," he said, still trying for a smile. They hadn't really talked, not since, well, since the day before training. "Playing-wise, I mean."

"You're putting too much spin on the release." Guy stood at the edge of the court with his hands in his jean pockets, looking at the man playing basketball.

"Is that it?" He nodded as he jogged to grab the ball, sweeping it up, "you want to give it a go? Show me how it's done?"

Guy chuckled and shrugged, "Yeah, sure." What not, right? He hadn't been out much since his arrival and hadn't even needed to dress up as the Green Lantern, which was an odd feeling.

He took a step onto the court and smiled. "You'll have to forgive me if I don't live up to my advice. I haven't played in a while."

It was only when the other guy stepped into the court lights that Babe saw it. Sure, the voice was similar and stuff, but that was just weird. Babe blinked, shaking his head as he passed over the ball.

"Yeah, no, it's alright. I haven't played for a while either," he smiled a bit stiffly, "I'm Babe."

The pale woman in black hangs casually on the fence for a while, watching without interrupting. When the ball rolls her way, though, she bends to retrieve it mid-roll. "Evening," she calls, jovial.

"Evening," he scrubbed a hand over his hair, grinning at the women at the edge of the court. "Guess I'm not as good as I remembered."

"Look just fine from over here." Death's eyes twinkle, even from this distance. She bounces the ball once before bouncing it over to Babe. "You need an opponent, or are you just shooting?"

"Wouldn't mind an opponent," he's played some with girls before, back home. Of course, mostly when they were all younger. "You play?"
