"Alice?"
She wasn't there and her side of the bed was still warm. Carlos was on his feet and dressed in record time, shrugging on a shoulder holster as he bolted out the door. It slammed behind him, but he didn't care. The door had closed and he'd woken up. She'd gotten up without him hearing, or someone had come in without him hearing.
He didn't stop running until he'd made it out onto the street and saw her a little ways away. "Jesus Christ." He slowed slightly, heart hammering in his chest. She had to stop scaring him like this.
