Always the Good Guy (OTA, Tag Ranger)

May 27, 2008 20:45

"What did you call me?" A burly, raven-haired man grabbed the collar of a thin, red-headed man and pulled him forward. They had been playing pool and it looked like the burly man in leather had lost. He didn't look pleased. The red-head smirked, "I said, 'What a tool'." The burly man gave a grunt before swinging his arm back and clocking the ( Read more... )

Ranger had watched the whole encounter passively from his corner. He wasn't the type to break up bar fights, unless they edged too close to his personal space so he had been content to let the other man wrangle the two drunks apart. It was impressive, too. Here, clearly, was another person with military training. Ranger was beginning to wonder if that was some sort of requirement, but then he remembered Stephanie and changed his mind.

He lifted his own beer to his lips and took a long draw as Riley turned from the pool table and went to order his own drink. He'd been waiting patiently for some sign from the village as to whether or not this RangeMan idea was going to work. He'd been told facilities just showed up when they were required, so he was biding his time. Still, he could always use an extra man on board for when the time did come. He was going to bet this man would have what he was looking for.

"Army?" he asked as the bartender set Riley's beer on the bartop, "Navy? Or something else."

Riley palmed the cool beer bottle and turned to face the guy who had asked the question. He looked like the kind of guy who was cool and collective, kind of like Graham, but different. Darker, maybe.

"Something else." He offered a small smile as he took a sip from the bottle. "Secret division of the U.S. Military." He glanced back at the pool table and winced slightly, "Kind of made a spectacle, didn't I?"

"No, I think you averted the spectacle," Ranger replied with a shake of his head. He felt his mental eyebrows shoot up at the words "Secret Division of the U.S. Military." Like what, Men in Black? Ranger had come in contact with some agencies that were strictly off the books, but it wasn't common. And Riley, who, to be honest, looked military, but not secret agency.

"I wasn't exactly planning on averting anything tonight." And yet, things like that always happened to him and he couldn't help it. "I guess you can take the man out of the uniform, but not the uniform out of the man, huh?" He tipped his bottle for another sip.

Well, it's a good thing Rachel had already scammed ten bucks off the redhead before the biker dude showed up. Otherwise, she might have been disappointed to miss out on the easy pray. Now, she was just content with sipping her drink and watching it all go down. When all was said and done, she was actually a bit impressed with Riley.

Rachel looked over as he came up to the bar. "I'd say you need it after that. Although, I'm usually the one getting pulled off, so I don't exactly know how tough your part was." She said with a smirk.

Riley flashed her a pleasant smile as he laughed and took a sip of beer. "It's surprisingly not hard when they're drunk. They're slow and clumsy."

"I'm never clumsy when I'm drunk. Just sort of sex crazed actually." Well, actually, it doesn't even count because she's always sex crazed. "If I do get to that 'can't stand' point, which is rare with my tolerance, I usually just look for some soft ground and lay down until I sober up a bit or someone helps." She admitted.

"Sounds like some of the girls I know at college. I tend to be the one who helps." He conitnued to smile. "I'm a bit of a sucker for people who need help."

Buffy had stepped into the Firecracker just as Riley strode over to the fighting drunks. She took a step in that direction to help, but stopped when she saw he had it under control, so she watched. She liked watching Riley in action, it brought back happy memories. Okay, bittersweet ones, too.

She followed him to the bar and slid onto the stool next to him. "You looked good back there."

He turned and looked at Buffy. Usually he could feel her when she was in a room. She gave off a certain vibe that he couldn't shake, but he had been busy with the brawl that he didn't notice. "Thanks. I guess old habits die hard, huh?" Riley smiled at her and gestured to the bartender, "Drink?" He wasn't about to let Buffy buy her own if he was around.

"Thanks." Buffy smiled at Riley. "Strawberry daiquiri." She was never ever going to drink beer again. Cave!Buffy was too fresh of a memory.

"Tell me about it. I had a chance to not do Slaying anymore, to be a normal girl and I'm still slaying. I guess sometimes old habits are really just a part of you." Buffy mentally winced at how stupid she sounded. Duh that's why they're called old habits.

"You've found things to slave here?" He peered at her questioningly. "I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing." He took a moment to consider it while taking a sip of beer.
