Jack was tired. He tried so hard to be the hero. The one who saved the world. Worlds too. And he was he'd done it, so very many times. But at what cost?
Ianto. Tosh. Owen. Suzie. His own grandson, Steven. All of their deaths on his hands. And so many more than that.
The greater good. It was something he had to tell himself, but this time it fell flat. He was a curse to everyone he got close to. Better to leave before it was Gwen he killed next. Times like this, he really understood why the Doctor couldn't stay one place long. Stay too long and the bodies started to pile up around you. He needed to leave. Needed to go away from here. Away from Earth.
But first he needed to say goodbye to Gwen. He stood on the hill as he said his goodbyes, Only Gwen tried to get him to stay. But he couldn't. He just couldn't.
"But you, you saved us. Didn't you?" Gwen pleaded.
"I began to like it. And look what I became. Still. I have lived so many lives. It's time to find another one." he stepped back and lifted his wrist strap and pressed the button.
"They died, and I am sorry, Jack, but you cannot just run away. You cannot run away!"
The teleportation field.of the ship started to surround him, and he shook his head at Gwen, grief apparent in his eyes.
"Oh, yes, I can. Just watch me."
And then he was gone.
Only he reappeared somewhere he didn't expect. Jack was fairly certain the interior of cold fusion cruiser shouldn't look like this.
Cobblestone, moonlight, cute little shops. This wasn't right. He looked down at his wrist strap in confusion and frustration. He was trying to get away. But not to a place like this.
