The Holiday Ball ((Gathering Post))

Dec 16, 2011 16:59

All in all, the holiday ball comes together beautifully. There's a huge Christmas tree that Laura has nothing to do with - the village has a way of making things appear, and honestly, she's glad she didn't have to decorate it. There is a group of tables on one side of the large ballroom, decorated with deep red and gold and servers waiting around ( Read more... )

Sonya had reservations about attending the winter ball. Even after all this time, she found she couldn't really stand crowds unless on duty: then she recalled only a month ago, she made a promise to 'live', and living meant not holing up in her room.

She entered the ballroom with Ren, dressed in a blue gown, with her ownly jewelry being the sapphire necklace she recieved last christmas. She rarely ever wore jewerly, and considering what Ren told her about Rosalie's usual reactions to people-why not wear it. Her main concern wasn't the necklace, but the straps that did nothing to hide the long, jagged scar along her left shoulder and collar bone, a 'soviener' from her last battle home.

Ren (she was almost ashamed to admit) convinced her that people will be too busy noticing 'her' and not her scar. She also reminded herself that it was earned in battle and thus nothing to be ashamed of.

Still, her arm occasionally found her left shoulder, trying to cover it as she skirted the crowds, the decorations making her feel almost tiny. Even the last christmas party she'd been to had nothing on this.

Margaret was wearing a red gown that was snug up top, but gave plenty of freedom of movement. Despite being seven months along, she still did the little skipping step that was natural to her when she was excited as she approached her friend.

"Oh my goodness, you look wonderful!"

In all honesty, Sonya wasn't that surprised to see Margaret with that much spring in her step, even as far along as she was. Anyone, in her opinion, that could run a nurse ward and call 'twin wrangling' exciting, would never 'not' be an energetic person.

Sonya also couldn't help but smiling at the compliment. "I know, who'd have thought I'd clean up this well."

"And you look great as well, very much into the holiday spirit." Of course, the reality of not needing to 'duck and cover' may also play a part-hard to keep cheery with such a threat over one's head.

"I just love red," She says, giving a twirl, then leans over to murmur, "it's not OD green."

Sonya instantly laughed outloud at the implication of Margaret being tired of OD green.

"No, it's definitely not OD green. I almost went for a red shade myself, but then," She paused. "Well, I tend to stir away from flashy colors, and besides, Ren's aunt gave me this necklace for christmas last year and this is the first occasion I've been able to wear it."

So why not chose a dress to match.

The smile returned, and it was her turn to lean over.

"That's not to say I'm going all out for fashion." She lifted the hem of her dress a little, showing her black combat boots-newly polished for the event.

Margaret laughed.

"It's a gorgeous necklace: you made the right choice. I'm not quite that in love with my army boots, but I'd rather wear them than some of the torture devices women strap on their feet these days."

Margaret was wearing a pair of ballet flats with her gown.

Sonya snickered.

"I've worn these things through thick and thin, can even dance in them. Besides, the dress is long enough so who's going to see unless they're looking." She gave something of a conspirator grin.

"Besides, I like to be prepared if someone needs their ass kicked-much easier to do that in boots than in heels or bare feet."

It was safe to say that by now, Sonya felt completely at ease talking to Margaret. The woman was military and had a no nonsence attitude about her that she appreciated-and she told her earlier that she would've gladly punched a king of england in the face.

Margaret grinned.

"True. I'm more likely to attack in the time-honored Irish style -- that involves picking up a chair or a bottle."

"Always a classic, but if you're not withing grabbing distance of a bottle or chair-you have to improvise. Besides, you don't always have time to know if it's a good or bad bottle of alchohol that you're breaking-and why waste."

Again with the grin.

"One thing I did learn in charm school-work with what you have. In my case, they come tipped with reinforced steel."

It was almost funny, if she thought about it, anyone looking at them would've just thought they were discussing fashion-not ways to cause injury.

"Not to mention that your feet'll be protected if someone else is breaking bottles. You should see the scars on the bottoms of McClane's feet. Seems he got caught with his shoes off once, when a bunch of mercenaries attacked."

Sonya couldn't help but flinch. She supposed her own feet would be tough enough to withstand such injuries-not to mention the reality that sore feet could heal, being killed (unless you had connections) couldn't.

"Bet he loved having them stitched up." Atleast when her arm was broken, it was her left arm and she could still use it to an extent.

"The healing period had to be a female dog." She shook her head. "Ever since I saw them, I made real sure to know where my shoes are at all times." She chuckled.

Sonya laughed.

"Seriously? You can say the word infront of me, remember I'm army just like you-I've heard nearly every bad word you could think of..some of them not even in English."

She became a little more serious. "Two things I always have by my nightstand-shoes and a sharp dagger." She used to use a glock, but too many things could withstand bullets, and of course there was a thing as richocet."

"Right, and you never know what's on the other side of the wall." Margaret nodded. "Tyr taught me a lot of hand to hand, but what I'm most comfortable with is a hardwood club with a steel rod in the middle. Goes back to the old Irish shillelagh, I suppose."

"One of my instructors at the military told me it was stupid to be picky. If all you have is a chair, then use the damn chair-or club, stick.." She thought a moment. "I actually managed to blind an enemy by punching him while holding a nail between my fingers-it was dark which helped him to not see the nail until it was too late."

"If you ever need some broadening, I'm open for lessons as well. I've been teaching Ren for nearly two years and she's certainly not slacking." It also helped that with the magic school closed for the semester, Sonya had a little more free time.

"A keyring in the fist with the keys extending out between the fingers gives good results too. I'll be glad of having someone different to spar with -- once I'm back in sparring condition."
