Football Tryouts (Backdated to Saturday morning - Gathering Style - OTA)

Sep 17, 2011 23:05

James had arrived at the park early to get everything set up for the tryouts. Not that there was a lot of setting to do, but he'd set up a field goal, marked some places on the grass, put out some cones for running exercises, simple things like that ( Read more... )

I am very uncertain about this football game. But I said I would be at the tryouts and learn about it, so of course I am here. I feel very silly wearing the strange athletic shoes that I bought so long ago when I was using the gym--before I had my sword tree--and the exercise clothing makes me feel even more uncomfortable. I do not belong in this clothing but it's what people wear.

If this does not suit me, I do not have to participate. Trying it out will not hurt anything.

He is likely to look nervous/uncomfortable about the athletic wear. He did use it, but that was a couple of years back./small>

James is thrilled that people are actually showing up, and that his dream of a village football league just might not be as far-fetched as he'd feared.

He approaches someone he knows to be Faramir - although they have never met, and smiles a friendly smile.

"Hey, there. We ain't met, but I'm James Ford. Thanks for coming."

"Hello. I'm Faramir. I know nothing of this game except that I promised I would come to the tryouts." And I do as I say I will. "I know very little about any Earth sports, actually. Though football is a popular game in several countries."

I shrug.

"No harm can come of trying." Though I do wonder about the young man in the wheelchair.

He does not know that football and American football are not the same game.

"Soccer is a popular game in several countries. Europeans call it football, but it ain't. Football's an entirely different and better sport."

He smiled though.

"But I'm thrilled you're here anyway. As I said, I'll be glad to teach everyone anything they need to know, we ain't the NFL here. Just for fun and a little friendly rivalry, ya know?"

Artie's special football wheelchair had arrived in the village just as the notice came round about football try outs. Well, who was he to argue with the village when it decided that he should try out?

He'd arranged to go with Puck, and he was in a relatively beligerent mood. He'd been cooped up far too long, and he needed to let of steam. What better than this?

James is surprised to see the boy in the wheelchair, but hell, who's he to say what's possible and isn't? After his life, he's come to believe that anything's possible if you want it enough. And he sure as hell ain't going to ruin anyone's dreams.

"Hey," he says with a friendly smile, "Thanks for coming. I'm James Ford."

Puck jogged up just then, with a couple bottles of water one of which got dropped unceremoniously in Artie's lap.

"You're the doc's husband," hey he paid attention. And considering John had ended up on his couch back in the day when the dude had showed up he probably knew more than either of them wanted.

"I'm Puck and this is Artie."

[ooc: We thought we'd take this three way if that is cool with you :D]

Joslire arrived, wearing the clothing he wore for running laps and combat training. He looked about wondering if he would know the least about football, or if there would be others as clueless as he.

He's powerfully muscled, but moves with undeniable grace and agility.

James grinned at Joslire, glad to see that he'd come to tryouts.

"Hey," he said warmly. "Good to see you here. How're Laura and Butterball?"

"Good greeting." He raises an eyebrow at the 'Butterball', but he's not denying. "They are well." He looked over at his friend.

"I don't know much about the game. Robert likes to throw the ball. I like to catch it, and run with it."

James raised an eyebrow with interest.

"Ah, is that so? And is Robert good at throwing and you at catching and running with it?"

Maybe he'd be lucky enough to have a quarterback and a receiver right off.

Robert is wearing his running clothes, and actually has a football, which he tosses up and catches with the ease of familiarity. He only knows the basics of the game, but he does enjoy tossing the football, the crozer hinge in his shoulder making nearly supernaturally long throws possible.

Robert looks around at the others, the poster child for friendly approachability.

James has never met Robert, but his good nature is infectous and he's smiling big as he approaches him.

"Hey, thanks for coming. I'm James Ford. You played before?"

"Good greeting, I'm Robert StClair." He shakes his head. "Not really. I know the basics of the game, but have only ever tossed the ball around with my friend."

"Do you have a position you'd like to try out for?"

James was looking him over with a critical eye. Tall and well muscled. Strong arms. Not built like a linebacker, though. James was thinking quarterback or receiver, depending on how he could throw.

John jogged to the try-outs. He played football in school, and liked it well enough, but what really appealed to him about this, was that it was an activity he could participate in with Puck, who'd probably laugh at him and call him 'old man', necessitating the need for revenge, and the very idea made John grin with anticipation.

"Hey," James smiled, approaching John. "Glad you showed up."

He shrugged with a feral grin.

"Couldn't resist the chance to take a few people down."

"Thought this might be a good way for us all to let out some steam, and since the village doesn't like to give me the games I want to see...thought we could make our own."

He grinned.

"Should I put you on a different team than Puck?"
