Title: The Covetous Winds That Swept Us Home
Subject: Eros/Psyche
Summary: A third-generation Greek immigrant, Alma, lives in Tarpon Springs, FL, waiting tables at her family's business. Carried carefully by the first waves of immigrants, the old gods of the Greek pantheon still have an eye on the tiny, sea-cradled town, and one - Aphrodite, always jealous - does not like the way Alma turns in the thoughts of the town's men. She sends her son, Eros, to do her bidding - but underestimates the effect a young mortal girl's beauty can have even on a god.
A modern AU for the classic Eros & Psyche myth, for
feathertofly, who is wonderful and lovely and made a great mix I can't stop listening to <3 I only hope to return the favor.
Oona Chaplin for Alma/Psyche, Alex Libby for Eros.
Notes: Fanmix includes front and back covers and a .zip file of all 20 songs. Enjoy! :)
the covetous winds.
One. Tightly, Neko Case. when i'm walking in the dark, i'm free to covet all i want. you've made it all so very dangerous, i can't stay away. if i meet you in the night, you're free to covet all you like. don't you try and stop me, i cling tightly to this life.
Two. A Hand to Take Hold of the Scene (Live), Okkervil River. i'd like to bear witness to a light that is fine and is filling the cryingest eyes. grace in each face that is making the wastedest, brokenest ones fairly fly. love that is innocent of that old cynical, covetous, cancerous vibe and a beauty that annihilates all life.
Three. Tiger Mountain Peasant Song, First Aid Kit. through the forest, down to your grave where the birds wait and the tall grasses wave. they do not know you anymore. into town one morning i went, staggering through premonitions of my death. i don't see anybody that dear to me.
Four. Mermaid, Okkervil River. she's pretty, i think, with her hair dark as ink and her belly bone-white and her lips of a slight sea-shell pink. she's so thin and so pale, i see her rise up and she's so fast and so fair. my hands meet and they press to a point in the air but my mouth fills with more panic than prayer and my skull with more color than care and my heart fills with love, with too much love to bear.
Five. Sea of Love, Cat Power. come with me, my love, to the sea, the sea of love. i want to tell you how much i love you. do you remember when we met? that's the day i knew you were my pet. i want to tell you how much i love you.
Six. West of Her Spine, Bell X1. sometimes early in the morning i watch her breathing rise and fall. i've spilled in drunk beside her in the stillness of dawn. see how her hair spills over, like frayed ends of twine all wild and wrapped around her like these wandering arms of mine. now careful not to wake her i trace back along the twine to where her nerve-endings sing of too much of my time. it's here i'll rest my chin and breathe her deep, and smile, for i think i've found a soft spot and i'll lie here a while.
Seven. Civilian, Wye Oak. i know my faults but i can hide them. i still keep my baby teeth in the bedside table with my jewelry. you still sleep in the bed with me, my jewelry and my baby teeth. i wanted to give you everything but i still stand in awe of superficial things. i wanted to love you like my mother's mother's mothers did, civilian.
Eight. Maine Island Lovers (Live), Okkervil River. to love without ceasing, flowering orchards, salty sea-things. to say without shyness, "unreal city, you have killed me". when you walked out on her love, was it easy? when i left him while sleeping was i dreaming?
Nine. Lenders in the Temple, Conor Oberst. hello, patterns in my mind now moving slow, sorrow all across the surface roads smoothing out the edges of the stone. the lights are out, where'd everybody go? alone. if you loved me, then that's your fault. if i miss you, well, that's my fault.
Ten. New Slang, The Shins. gold teeth and a curse for this town were all in my mouth, only i don't know how they got out, dear. turn me back into the pet that i was when we met, i was happier then with no mind-set. dawn breaks like a bull through the hall, never should have called but my head's to the wall and i'm lonely.
Eleven. Gone for Good, The Shins. i find a fatal flaw in the logic of love and go out of my head. you love a sinking stone that'll never elope, so get used to the lonesome, girl, you must atone some. go back to your hometown, get your feet on the ground and stop floating around.
Twelve. Love Is Not Enough, The Wealthy West. love can be terrible and it can make you miserable and love can drive a man to sorrow. it is a knife that cuts you, a new word that hurts you. love, it's a horrible master, and a terrible monster.
Thirteen. World Without End, A.A. Bondy. so don't leave me behind for i'm lost among my kind and now you are broken, i am less. world without end, oh, world without end and where, my girl, are you sleeping tonight?
Fourteen. Dream Lover/Squid Suit, Lovers. dream lover, come and find me. i've been here but i've been hiding. despite our mistakes, we still deserve this. i wrote by their portrait of the sea, "i'll still love you when the ocean tugs you from me." i'll still love you.
Fifteen. Only If for a Night (Unplugged), Florence + The Machine. the only solution was to stand and fight and my body was loose and i was set alight, but she came over me like some holy rite and although i was burning, you're the only light.
Sixteen. Cold Cold Water, Mirah. i left the only home i knew, i stayed alive and i found you. when i ride again into the night, my torch will shoot flames strong and bright and my absence will remind you of how tough it is to be in love.
Seventeen. Heartlines (Unplugged Acoustic), Florence + The Machine. i've seen it in the flights of birds, i've seen it in you, the entrails of the animals, the blood running through. but in order to get to the heart, i think sometimes you'll have to cut through. just keep following the heartlines on your hand. there's fantasy, there's fallacy, there's tumbling stone, echoes of a city that's long overgrown. your heart is the only place that i call home, i cannot be returned.
Eighteen. Your Bones, Of Monsters and Men. so hold on, hold on to what we are, hold on to your heart.
Nineteen. We Are Stars, The Pierces. we are stars, fashioned into flesh and bone. we are islands, excuses to remain alone. we are moons, throw ourselves around each other. we are oceans, being controlled by the pull of another. and i just wanna be loved by you.
Twenty. Chariot, Page France. swing, like a chariot at the trumpet call when we're all unsaved. swing like a wrecking ball, like the heart of god, what a mystery. come and carry us, come and marry us. so we will become a happy ending.
