Title: "the last time they spoke was over a can of soda" (prompt by @hyukggu)
Rating: PG...?
Genre: Slight Angst, Friendship
Characters: Kibum and Donghae
A/N: 581 w. Kibum has publicly announced separating from Super Junior and continue his solo career as an actor. Donghae was perplexed about the whole thing and finds himself in the memory lane. Un-beta'd and can't be assed to do so. This is a drabble from a sentence prompt  by @hyukggu on twitter. Long story short, she was kind enough to give me a prompt to work with because I've been craving to write a fanfic, but I had nothing to write about. I know she's one of those cool cats who stans Kihae so I turned it into one :) (Sorry it's angsty though :[) Lastly, It has been awhile since I have written something, so pardon me.

“Kim Kibum of Super Junior had publicly announced his stepping down from the group to pursue his solo acting career.”

Donghae couldn’t believe the news when he first heard of it. It was too soon - too abrupt even, for him to completely apprehend what had happened. He certainly did not saw this coming. Neither did the rest of the group for everyone sat in front of the television in eerie silence - the feelings of shock and betrayal was eminent in the room; however, none of them competed with how much hurt Donghae had felt. Not only did he felt hurt, but he also felt confused - no, perplexed on how it ended up like this.

Wasn’t it last month when they mistakenly ordered Chinese food instead of calling Han Geng to cook his famous Beijing fried rice? “It’s not my fault his number is similar to the Chinese restaurant across the street, and it was rude to just hang up,” Donghae argued as he stuffed greasy lo mien noodles in his mouth. Kibum shook his head and ate his dumplings in silence.

Wasn’t it last week that they were joking around and laughing at Donghae’s numerous silly alien theories? “No, Kibum listen to me, I think aliens would really like ice creams. If we just offered them some, then maybe they wouldn’t eat us after that!” Donghae explained ecstatically. “But if they started liking ice creams, then, they will probably conquer Earth and enslave humans to make ice creams for the rest of our lives,” Kibum countered with an amused chuckle. Donghae, visibly stumped by Kibum’s argument, pouted in response.
Wasn’t it a couple of days ago when Kibum was chasing a cackling Donghae after he had commanded Bada to pee on Kibum’s bedroom floor as a prank? “Come back here and clean that mess!” Kibum shouted while he tried to grab Donghae’s faded green t-shirt. “Never!” Donghae shouted in between his fits of laughter.

And, wasn’t it yesterday, the day before the shocking public announcement, that they had an argument on who gets the last can of soda in the fridge? “As much as your argument is as valid as mine, this just means that we settle this the fair way; rock, paper, scissors.” Donghae offered, while Kibum nodded. “Rock, paper, scissors!” they both cried, Donghae settling for scissors and Kibum choosing paper. “Hah! I win!” Donghae rejoiced by dancing around the kitchen, to which Kibum used this chance to grab the soda and casually walked away to his room. “HEY! NOT FAIR!” Donghae pounded on Kibum’s locked door.

They seemed happy the whole time. So, what happened? Had he missed something? Did he not miss the signs, but chose to brush it off instead?

Donghae wished Kibum had told him beforehand - they were the best of friends after all, weren’t they? Donghae couldn’t help but feel regret that the last time they spoke was over a can of soda, instead of him trying to prevent Kibum’s leaving - but, Donghae knew better. He knew that this probably happened for a reason.

Donghae also knew everything will change from now on - for good or bad, he wasn’t sure. However, Donghae decided that if Kibum ever came back to him, he will welcome his best friend with open arms and even give him a chance to explain everything; because Kibum had already occupied a huge space in his heart and it will be hard to replace it with something or someone else.
