Onew is wiping the café shop’s counter in front of him. It is eleven o’clock at night, meaning it is near closing time. He hums to himself quite happily; he would sing, but he’s embarrassed about other people hearing him - except for one. Unfortunately, that one person doesn’t even know him.
Twenty-five minutes has passed when the tiny bell above the entrance door rang. Completely out of reflex, Onew looks up and is about to greet the newly arrived customer when he spots the familiar girl he has been crushing on for months. However, instead of the usual cheerful girl that stole his heart, it’s a lonely girl bravely trying to hide her tears from the public. Onew’s heart plummets immediately as he watches her speed-walk at the booth behind the barely empty café shop.
Immediately, he steps in front of the coffee machine and brews the usual coffee she orders; a warm cup of Caramel Macchiato. He’s aware that she did not order, but something inside made him feel obligated to do something for her, anything to take away some of the pain she’s feeling right now. Sounds cheesy, but he doesn’t care.
The coffee machine dings, indicating that the brewing process is completed. He carefully pours some of the hot coffee in a white porcelain cup, then, he reaches for the milk pitcher and fills the rest of the cup. Onew watches the liquid change colors from black to mocha with white froth forming at the side. He looks around for the squeeze bottle that contains caramel. It takes him for a minute to locate it near and almost at the back of the coffee machine. He grumbles Jonghyun’s (his co-worker) name as he grabs for it.
Slowly, Onew squeezes the caramel out of its container; a few more squeezes and he’s done. He steps back a bit and grabs a thin metal stick from a utensil cup-like holder. He wipes it with a clean cloth and starts to work on the blob of caramel on top of the drink with his nimble hands. Each intricate flicks he makes, every meticulous swish he does turned the blob of caramel into a delicate art. He stands up straight and admires his work for a moment before he left behind the counter with the warm cup of artsy coffee in his hands.
He slowly walks towards the girl with her back facing him. He notices how she sighs every now and then, trying to hide her shaky shoulders that Onew never failed to notice. He swallows his nervousness and slides the warm cup of coffee towards her with a low voice, “Here you go.”
Granted, the girl jumps up in surprise. She quickly wipes her face and looks up at him, then, back to the cup. “I- I didn’t order this.”
“I know.”
“But why…?”
“It looks like you need one.” Onew smiles kindly at her and walks back to the counter with uneasy steps, he is sure that one wrong step and he will send himself tumbling down the floor. He cannot believe he just talked to his crush and he feels like he’s in cloud nine. The girl looks at his retreating back and smiles. She whispers, “Thank you.”
She stares lovingly at the cup in front of her; there was an animated image of a cat’s face with small words underneath it, “It’ll be okay. Cheer up, Hiro.”
Simple words that somehow healed most part of her pain; a pain she’s not even sure where it came from. All she’s aware of is that there is a nice man behind the counter of the shop that made her night better. She hesitantly thinks about drinking the coffee for awhile; it was too cute to consume. Then, she came up with an idea of taking a picture of it using her phone. Hiro gladly sips on the warm beverage, eyes widening at how it tastes better than the usual.
Ten minutes later, it’s already eleven-forty at night, 20 minutes before the store closes. Onew hopes that the girl, Hiro, stays for a while until the store closes. He has finally decided to pluck up the courage to talk to her. Unfortunately, fate must have chosen to pick on him that night. He saw her stood up from her seat and walk towards him. He gulps for unknown reason; maybe from the butterflies in his stomach that appears whenever she looks at him - even if he was just in the peripheral.
She reaches the counter and smiles at him in a friendly manner; Onew’s heart skyrockets and explodes into love glitters in the air - like a firework. When he notices that she’s reaching for her pocket, he immediately puts his hand up saying, “It’s on the house.”
“I can’t.”
“No, I insist.”
“…okay. Good night.” And with that, she left the café hesitantly. Onew’s heart plummets once again as he watches her leave. “There goes my chance in trying to talk to her,” he mumbles sadly.
The small grandfather clock sitting at the corner of the café strikes at eleven, each chime it produces echoes inside the now empty shop. Onew is just done with the inventory and is now ready to go home after a somewhat long day of work. He picks up the keys to the shop and walks outside.
The warm breeze of summer hits his cheeks playfully. The temperature is just the way Onew likes it. He closes the shop, making sure it was completely locked, and turns around only to be surprised by the sight in front of him.
“Hello, Onew-ssi.” Hiro is leaning on the wall next to the shop, obviously waiting for him. She stands straight up and walks up to him.
“Uh… h-hello.” Onew mentally curses himself for stuttering, but that did not stop him from questioning how she knows his name. She must have known what he’s thinking, for she smiles at him kindly, saying, “I’ve been going to this café for months, you know, I am bound to remember who works here by now. And I’m sure you know who goes here regularly, that’s why you knew my name, right?”
“Of course, Hiro-ssi.” Onew awkwardly chuckles because he knows he just lied. He never bothered remembering other customer’s name, only faces; except to those who actually engages a conversation with him from time to time, like Jonghyun’s best friend, Kibum or Key as he insists. There is an awkward silence slowly forming around them, they stood in front of each other awkwardly, exchanging awkward smiles every time their eyes meet after staring at the ground. Onew clears his throat, catching Hiro’s attention, “Shall I walk you home?”
“Not if it’s out of your way. I just live down this road.” She smiles. Onew silently thanks the heaven above because he walks the same way, only a couple more streets further. “Really? I go down this road. What a coincidence.”
They exchange another awkward laughs before they start walking home. They walk slowly and wordlessly, the silence that started from awkward is turning into a comfortable silence. Contented smiles grace their faces as the walk along the dimly lit street. From time to time, their hands would brush each other, causing small sparks to tingle their arms. This is a nice night, they both thought.
Onew grows even more comfortable to a point that he starts to sing in habit. He immediately stops when he realizes that someone is with him. She turns her head at him and frowns, “Why did you stop?”
“Sorry, I’m not comfortable singing with others around.”
“You just did and you sing quite beautifully.” Her statement causes the blood to rush up to his cheeks. Fortunately for him, the street is dim enough to cover it. “Thank you. That means a lot to me.”
She smiles at his grateful words and playfully nudges him, “Will you sing for me from now on?”
“Sure…wait what? For now on?” he questions her. Clearly she must have mistaken her grammar. She lightly laughs at his confusion; it makes his heart flutter even more.
“For sure, this won’t be our last time seeing each other, right?” she asks curiously.
“Uhm, yes?” Onew is quite unsure of the question. Sure, he wants to hung out with her more often, but does she? The kind smile on her face answers his question. He smiles back and nods his head, “Okay, I’ll sing to you from now on.”
“Great! I’m looking forward to that. Well, this is my house. I’ll see you tomorrow, Onew-ssi?”
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Hiro-ssi. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight! And thank you again!” And with that, Hiro waves goodbye to him as she entered the manor safely while Onew is waving back at her.
“And love, such a silly thing we play. It’s like a summer’s day in May,” He starts to sing merrily as he continues his way home with a huge grin on his face. He can’t wait to go to work tomorrow.
