28 Insignificant
Three months, she'd held out.
Three months, it had taken for the initial reaction to Porter in her living room - and her bed - to wear off. Trey Donovan was a really nice guy, but every little thing he did somehow reminded her of the boys. He had Charlie's sense of humor; Jack's hug; Levi's strength; Billy's manners... and he looked at her the way Wyatt did. She'd apologized the first night, over peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches, warning him that there was a good chance she'd slip and call him "Porter".
He simply shrugged and smiled.
She slipped six times.
12 Chastity
The thought of sharing her bed with Trey had never honestly crossed Dree's mind. Well, the memories of other nights may have snuck in there, but, generally, Dree didn’t put much effort into getting in the middle of Jeff and Hilary. Only, this wasn't Jeff; it was Trey. It did make her laugh, late at night, when she was sitting at the table and working on Celcian "stuff" - as El called it - trying not to listen to El and Trey in the other room.
It would really be interesting once 'Jeff' showed up in her life... that was for sure.
40 Breakdown
The night El'Ari got back to Celcia, they'd planned to go out for dinner and catch up. Unfortunately, El was running late and had called to tell them she was still at the shipyard. She suggested they go on ahead and she'd meet them there, long as they didn't mind that she smelled like she'd just come from space.
Trey would have gone back to his place while she was away, but El had asked him to keep an eye on Dree. They'd fallen into comfortable; maybe because El was gone... and maybe not. They were friends.
That was it...
11 Gluttony
It really wasn't fair to get into the drinking contest, Dree knew. She did have a slight advantage, seeing as how she never actually got drunk any more, but, if she could get the three college-aged boys to pay for their dinner, she'd take it. They were cute, she was bored and El was still late.
It was hard for her to remember how to play drunk, the more glasses she emptied. Luckily, Trey was next to her, hand on her elbow and giving her a nudge any time she started to act too sober.
"Set 'em up again, barkeep!"
02 Fireworks
"Man," the third college boy drawled, one eye closed and listing sideways, "how'd you ever land such a hot old lady?" Dree raised an eyebrow and turned to look over her shoulder at Trey. Unfortunately, she'd leaned just enough that gravity was stronger and she started to slip. Trey, thankfully, was paying attention and hooked an arm around her waist.
"By sleepin' with her wife," he said with a slight smirk.
"Heh," her challenger breathed before falling off his stool.
"I say that's a forfeit," his friend said. Dree raised her hands as Trey cheered and kissed her.
'Oh boy...'
21 The first thing you broke
If Trey had been phased by the kiss, he didn't let it show. Dree, however, had suddenly been thrown sideways, under a bus. Deciding that it was simply an effect of all the alcohol she'd downed, Dree tried to shake it off, but kept finding herself staring at Trey's mouth.
When he suggested they dance, Dree almost said no... but there was a part of her that was screaming to be closer to him; as close as El had been for the last three months. It only took half a second to ignore every reason she should turn him down.
34 Tune
Ironically, as soon as they moved to the dance floor, the song changed from something peppy to a slower, much more dangerous tune. Dree tried to think of anything else as Trey pulled her closer, and he was going over the startup checklist for El's shuttle. With every step, Dree was imagining another spot on her skin that he was kissing; he was trying not to let his hands move from where they sat on her waist.
El would be there, any moment. She would pull Trey away and Dree would return to their table and order the strongest drink.
09 Lust
Neither knew who finally made the first move, but, at some point, one of them did. Maybe both of them did. Perhaps it was just a simple curiosity, to see if that little spark the last time had been nothing more than static. Or, maybe, it was something more. He was El's... whatever he was. She didn't need a man in her life - well, she had men in her life, but not in that way.
In those few seconds, every reason why she shouldn't crossed Dree's mind.
Then again, her head and heart never did always see eye to eye.
