41 Run-in with neighbors
Adora glanced up from the table at the moment across the room. El's visitor was moving toward her with an almost uncomfortable smile on his face. She gave him a nod and looked back to the papers in front of her until he reached the end of the counter. Setting down her pen, Adora looked up to him and noticed every little bit of him that was identical to Porter - well, the parts she'd seen of him, anyway.
"So, uh," he started nervously, "this is a little awkward. Right?"
Adora raised an eyebrow. "Only a little?"
'Cute when he blushes...'
14 Charity
Trey shifted uncomfortably and took a second to think about how he'd managed to get himself into the current situation. 'You went to a bar. And you didn't ask questions.' Clearing his throat, Trey nodded again as Adora stood up.
"I'm sorry, I- I didn't-"
"Don't worry about it," Adora sighed. She wasn't sure which part of this whole thing should be freaking her out more: that her wife had brought a man home, and promptly taken him to bed in their room; or that he was a dead ringer for a man who'd died nearly four hundred years earlier.
17 Kindness
Adora picked up her empty glass and moved around the table. "Can I get you a drink?" she asked, choosing to ignore the obvious and simply play hostess. Trey turned as she passed and leaned against the counter.
"Actually... um," Trey started, then swallowed thickly and laughed, "I haven't eaten since breakfast."
Adora nodded and waved to the cupboard. "Help yourself." She tried not to watch him look at the selection in the pantry, but she couldn't help it. The resemblance was downright freaky.
"Score!" she heard him whisper, and raised an eyebrow as he waved the peanut butter. "Bread?"
15 Diligence
Adora pulled open a drawer and offered Trey a knife before moving over to the refrigerator and pulling out the bread. She watched as he prepared the sandwich, spreading peanut butter on both slices of bread.
"So, uh, 'lar says you've been-"
Adora raised an eyebrow. "You really want to have this conversation?" Trey stared at her for a moment and shook his head. He glanced back at the sandwich and felt entirely awkward. Again.
"Do you have any lettuce?" Adora's eyebrow went up, but she nodded. Opening the fridge again, she pulled a container out and passed it over.
18 Humility
Adora tried not to grimace as Trey pulled a few leaves of lettuce from the container, tore them up and placed them on top of the peanut butter. Next, he pressed the two pieces of bread together, picked up the knife again and sliced the sandwich in half.
Trey held up one half of the sandwich and smiled. "Here."
Adora moved a hand to her stomach and shook her head. "I'm good, thanks. Besides, you need it more than I do."
Trey offered it again. "Peace offering. I did sleep with your wife."
Adora sighed and took the offered half.
38 Sticky
Adora knew he was watching her examine the sandwich. Nothing about it seemed appealing - peanut butter and lettuce? She wouldn’t even give that to Charlie. Well, the peanut butter, probably... Actually, that was probably why she even had peanut butter in the cupboard.
Glancing up, she noted Trey was already done with his half of the sandwich. 'Please, tell me El hasn't been sticking her finger in the peanut butter and feeding Charlie.' Taking a breath, Adora realized that not trying the sandwich would be rude. 'Suck it up, Springer. Try something different.'
She took a bite and chewed slowly.
51 Ants on a picnic blanketDree stood in the kitchen and hummed along with the music echoing through the house as she made Max's lunch. His class was going on a picnic that afternoon. She always made two sandwiches: one for Max and one for herself, though, hers was usually gone before Max's lunch was even packed up. Dree liked to think of it as an early-morning snack; protein and carbs to get her energized for the day.
The song changed as she reached for the container of lettuce and Dree nodded with the drums as she finished up the peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches.
