for merry gentlemen

"So," he said, glancing over his shoulder as the sounds of people hollering at each other from across the room caught his attention. El, still on stage, was dealing with wires and talking to one of the techs about the lights. "Aside from librarian and, well, this madhouse," he teased again, waving to the still-empty bar, "favorite job."

Dree smiled and reached for one of the shots of cranberry juice. "Mechanic."

"Nice," Chris half-growled and took two shots of beer, as he'd been distracted by the book-talk.

"Only two questions left," Dree told him, nodding to the four filled glasses on the bar. Chris tried to fight the smile and reached up to scratch his forehead as he thought of a good question.

"Sound check!" he heard and turned again to see the brunette on stage adjusting the microphone stand. Chris turned back to Dree and reached for the sixth shot glass.

"Favorite music. Band, song, type," he shrugged.

"Your answer better the 'the house band'," came a male voice. Chris and Dree both looked sideways as a large, fairly well-build man came down the length of the bar. Chris watched as the guy - who definitely had him beat in the looks department - gave Dree a half-hug and kissed her cheek. Whatever he said to her, Chris noted that Dree was simultaneously blushing and going pale, which gave her an interesting color.

Chris let out a small sigh and picked up his last shot, but didn't drink it. He watched as the man stepped around Dree and grabbed a beer from the cooler. As much as he wanted to size up the competition, Chris found himself watching Dree stare at something below the bar.

"Hi, Jack," the man told him as he held out a hand over the bar. Chris straightened and reached for the man's hand.

"Chris," he nodded and shook Jack's hand. "Nice to meet you." Giving a slight smile to Dree, Chris nodded to her.

"Oh, no," Dree squeaked and shook her head. Waving her hand, Dree continued, “No no nonono."

Jack raised an eyebrow and glared at Dree. "Five. Really?" Dree's eyes widened and, for a moment, Chris wasn't sure if he should laugh or be terribly afraid.

for dead as a doornail

"Isn't there something in the back for you to BeDazzle," Dree got out through gritted teeth. Jack just smiled and pushed off the counter. He moved down the bar and came around to stand next to Chris. Winking at Dree, he passed a slip of paper toward Chris.

"Good luck," he said and ducked away as Dree chucked a lemon slice at him. Chris glanced at the piece of paper and raised an eyebrow. Dree's eyes narrowed as she watched the slight smirk creep up Chris' face.

"What does it say?" she asked, knowing that she really didn't want to know. Chris smiled and turned the slip of paper around, holding it up for her to see.

"Says that you're 'thicker than Froonium' and has a number. Also, apparently, I have a nice ass," Chris added with a smile. Dree's eyes widened and she leaned sideways to look up to the stage, where El was giving her a thumbs up.

"Qu'vatlh," Dree said under her breath and closed her eyes. Shaking her head, Dree turned and reached for the tequila and promptly poured herself a generous shot. She didn't even care that the glass had just had cranberry juice in it. Chris watched as she threw back the shot and let out a deep breath.

"I'm gonna kill her," Dree mumbled and nodded to herself. Chris just smiled and pocketed the paper with the number.

"Before you do that," he started, and leaned toward her to set the last shot of cranberry juice in front of her, "one last question." Dree watched him for a moment and shrugged. Chris looked at his own shot and a crooked smile slipped out. "Do you like kids?" he finally asked, raising his eyes to meet her.

Dree smiled and nodded. "I do like kids," she told him and stepped back to the back counter to reach for a photo hanging on the side of the cooler, Chris leaned sideways to see what she was reaching for and straightened as he saw the frame. Dree held the frame out for him. "Six of them, specifically." Chris looked at the picture of three boys and two girls, of varying ages, on one side, and a blonde, teenaged girl on the other side of the dual frame.

"These are your kids?" Chris asked, giving Dree a look. Dree nodded. "No way in Hell have you had six kids," he stated. Reaching over the bar, Dree pointed to Max, Jeb and Kenna.

"I had these three.” Chris' eyebrow practically hit the ceiling.

"Were you five when you had them?" Dree laughed and shook her head.

"I'm older than I look," she said, then shrugged and gave him a tiny smile. "She," Dree pointed to the photo of Ally, "was adopted."

"And these two?" Chris asked, pointing to TJ and Leora.

Dree smiled and shrugged slightly. "You could say... step-kids."

"Ha!" Chris cackled and pointed at her. "I knew it."
