Rue’s first memory was of waking in one of the alleys of Kinkan Town. She knew nothing of her life before that moment, not even her name. Her only possession was a beautiful sword with the word ‘Sylphide’ engraved into the blade. She did not wonder why she had it or if Sylphide was her name. She thought of nothing as she stood and wandered around, paying little heed to her surroundings until something bumped into her legs. She looked down to see a small boy with wild white hair being chased by a flock of ravens. Without a second thought, she drew her sword and struck down all ravens in her sight. The boy, who called himself Mytho, gave her a name out of gratitude and a kiss out of love, though she did not understand either of these feelings. She began to wander again, looking for others in danger. But her fight with the ravens had drained her more than she thought. Exhausted, she collapsed to the ground. When she woke, she found herself on a bed in a small room. Standing over her were two strangers: an older man who seemed surprised she was awake, and a little girl with bright eyes. They introduced themselves as Ahiru and Charon before asking who she was. Remembering Mytho’s gift, she gave her name as Rue. From that day forward, she lived with them, often traveling outside with Ahiru. Whenever Ahiru told her to wait outside a store, she waited. When asked to fetch something, she did. She followed any request without question. Ahiru, noticing this, told her what to do to keep her safe. But something inside her stirred whenever she noticed any creature in trouble. She would disregard any order to help them, no matter how dangerous the task. She did not understand why Ahiru seemed upset about this.
Rue’s time was divided between Ahiru, who vowed to protect her as much as she could, and Mytho, who vowed to have her love him. She would play with them or just walk around the town with them, always doing what she was told. She never questioned Mytho’s shy requests to say she loved him. She never second-guessed Ahiru’s judegment on anything. She only vaguely noticed they were growing older with a passing thought, never thinking of how she still had not aged. When Ahiru had the two of them enrolled in the Dance Academy, Mytho eagerly followed. From the first day, Rue danced as if she knew all the techniques of ballet by heart. She quickly moved up to the advanced class, where she was joined by Mytho. But even though her technique was perfect, she could not instill emotion in her movements. Then Prince Lohengrin began to appear, returning to her what she had lost: her heart shards. For every shard, she gained a new feeling, making her think and question more than she used to. At first, the feelings hurt her - loneliness, sorrow, fear. But as time passed, the pain ebbed away, and they felt natural. She gained lighter feelings to balance them out - curiosity, devotion, and, most importantly, love. But Lohengrin’s actions had awoken the Raven Prince Siegfried, who swore Rue would love him and only him. As she was obtaining her shard of love, he ripped it from her chest, effectively locking away the feelings she had already gained. She was once again an emotionless doll, unable to comprehend or deny any order, not even when Siegfried commanded her to nearly shatter her heart shard. The world around her was dimming by the second. The last thing she noticed before darkness overtook her was her dear Ahiru’s brave sacrifice for her, though she could not acknowledge it.
Then…she felt something. It was a strong, vibrant, and passionate feeling. But it was not her own. Someone was calling out to her. Someone cared deeply for her. Someone wanted to dance with her. The light gradually returned to her eyes, and with it her comprehension of the world. She could see two figures, though she could not tell who they were. She extended her hand, beckoning to the mysterious feeling, assuring them that she was there. A hand enclosed around hers, and at last she could fully see. Before her stood Prince Lohengrin, holding the stolen shard. As he returned it to her, she noticed the Raven Prince disappear, and something in her newly awakened heart hurt for him - was it sorrow? She had little time to dwell on her thoughts as Prince Lohengrin led her towards the exit. Her hand, grasped in his, tightened its grip as a slight twinge of another feeling - fear? - traveled up her spine. Something felt…wrong. A sudden flash of light caused her to rip her hand away and shield her eyes as she fell to the ground. Within seconds, it was over. She lay there, eyes covered, waiting for Prince Lohengrin to check on her. But he was not. Why was he not helping her? She uncovered her eyes to white walls and men ushering her off to her “barracks”.
