What do you think of Contests and Coordinators?

We'll start with one of my favorite things, contests! In general, what do you think about them? Specifically, do you like Hoenn or Sinnoh ones better?
Sinnoh contests can be seen as very girly with the addition to the dance and dress-up feature, (and the removal of directly messing up your fellow competitors) but I think they really added a lot of depth to contests. I like that the user is included in the dress up, and in the anime it may be my imagination but I think that in DP the contestants were closer and more involved in the appeals. Some people enjoyed the fun of messing others up in hoenn contests and how simple the appeals were.
Also, let's talk about the Coordinators! I really love Dawn of the anime because of how ambition she was from the very beginning. May just seemed to get into it because she didn't have anything else to do. (And I saw her game character as more of a trainer.) I really enjoyed Dawn's different outfits.
A BIG QUESTION HERE! I haven't read any of the manga. Does anyone know how the contests are portrayed in it?
