How do you prepare for contests?

Because I am so horribly impatient after I prepared this and I'm so terribly excited with our new members, here's a fresh topic!

But first, welcome our first moderator! mizu_kanon  !!!

So.. how do you prepare for contests?

I don't have much to say about the Hoenn Contests because I at that time I wasn't a very indepth player.
By the time the Sinnoh Super Contests came around I was a better gamer that could look more into the fine details about gameplay. There's a little more than looking pretty...

My first preparation for contests was always poffin! Now, I'm probably spoiled beause it's actually not so difficult for me to gather four people to make poffin with:
and my friend is somehow really good at understanding the berry combination mechanics in her head. I've tried to sit down with the formulas of it but I always mess up. So I usually just leave it to her to figure out. (We also may have got some really good berries from unkown sources...)

So with that it's easier for me to make some very high quality poffin for my pokemon. Before I lost my Pearl I had a Riolu with almost max stats in everything but Beauty.

Part 2 though, is movesets! You can look aa pretty as pretty can be, but if you can't appeal it does nothing!
I personally chose somewhat "low risk" movesets. While I've written out and planned a lot of fun ones I lost the resources and the time to gets all the pokemon together to get that moveset. (I love breeding things so I would always chain breed to get the moves I wanted.)

The most basic of my movesets which you could usually find on any pokemon was

+2 if first
+2 if last (or just double score if last)
Go first next turn or double score next turn
Standard +3 move

That moveset has all options no matter where you start on your turns and can take some mess-ups in the plans.

I tend not to mess with voltage and chance ones (if you are the only to choose that judge +8) but I had ment to try things like that before I lost my Pearl and fell out.

And here's a bonus question!
If you so wish to anwser or if you don't really know much about game mechanics.

If you were a coordinator in real life, how would you prepare for contests? I find it sad that pokemon eating candies are the closest thing we have to "grooming" the pokemon. I'd like to actually like to wash and groom them! Reminds me of something like this! Dear god if I could care for my pokemon like that! *_*

°Remember that if you want to post a topic, go ahead! I trust you all. |D And if you're too shy I'll do it for you.
