Do you think the baby wants to watch the Olympics....?
Because I can't stop. Oh no. It's 24/7 swimming inside my head. I watched with
catherinejulian on Saturday afternoon (and was able to dissect the finer points of backstroke technique. Apparently, I did learn something on swim team all those years ago.), OF COURSE I watched the finals with Michael Phelps and DARA TORRES. OMG. DARA TORRES. My love for her knows no bounds.
Also, my love for KATIEHOFF. Oh geez, I love her so much. And whenever I say her name, it's one word. KATIEHOFF. And Kirsty Coventry - I know she's not American, but she kicks so freakin' much a$$. She's like, the best thing that Zimbabwe's got going on. I'm kinda sad that Inge de Bruijn isn't swimming this year since she's the cutest thing since the dawn of cute. Natalie Coughlin's certainly got quite a lot of cute going on. So does Stephanie Rice (but why, oh why, are the rest of the Australian girls kinda... homely...?). And Loure Manadou.
And the relay team! OMG! That race! SO FREAKIN' AMAZING. SUCK IT, HATERZ FRANCE! Omg, omg, omg. I have never seen anyone (the US team) so ecstatic - and they totally, totally deserved. Fastest relay split every, WHAT - or so utterly humiliated at coming in 2nd (by 7/100ths of a second!). That French dude sat on the wall for like, an eon, and he totally looked like he was going to puke.
I haven't had the moneys to buy a Y membership down here, but I made the sad-bunny face and asked N and he agreed to pony up the dough when we get back from our mini-vacation to the IRV. I have GOTS to get me back into the pool. Not that I'm ever going to be competing again in my lifetime, I just wants to be in the water.
And the women's gymnastics! Ladies, for a bunch of girls falling on your collective behinds, you still managed to tell the Chinese that you mean serious bizness.
I'm not normally a "sports fan" but oh holy hell I love me some Olympics. I hear the little "dumdumdumdumdumdum derde dumdum" of the Olympic anthem and I feel all warm and gushy inside. And I'm totally, TOTALLY a sucker for the little heart-warming profiles of the athletes. Totally. I'll admit that I get downright patriotic when I see the medal ceremony and hear the Star Spangled Banner. It reminds me that in general, the u-SOFA is a good idea. Sometimes we do dumb sh*t, but in general, we're a good idea.
catherinejulian and I talked about how if my kids ever made it to the Olympics in anything - math, table tennis, whatever, I would totally be that embarrassing mom in the stands with like 4,000 signs and a foam finger and the whole nine yards. Oh hell yes.
