kobato wikia. Personality: If there's one thing about Kobato that immediately stands out to people, aside from her very sweet nature of course, is that she's very, very strange. As in, putting chocolate and milk into your nabe kind of strange. Because she's not from this world, she's totally oblivious to how most things work and there are a lot of things she doesn't understand -- even simple things, such as common, everyday mannerisms, like using umbrellas for when it is raining (she first thought that the best thing to use during the rain was a large leaf) and customs for holidays. She tends not to think and go over things in her mind too well, simply barging into situation after situation, thus making her seem idiotic and/or creeperish -- for example, directly approaching people on the street and begging them to let her heal them, or seating in a box in the middle of the street with the words "Please let me heal you!" taped on it.
She takes everything she reads and sees from manga, magazines, and television absolutely literally -- she tried drawing with her finger in concrete once, absolutely shocked when it didn't work according to what she read from Ioryogi-san's manga. She doesn't realize that most of what she sees and reads in manga and television are purely fictional, and thus she assumes that reality will play out exactly like they do in TV or in the books she reads. She has zero common sense, and something that could be considered common, everyday knowledge for normal people will appear absolutely new to Kobato. However, thanks to her mentor, Ioryogi-san (who is constantly yelling and firebreathing at her after she does something completely weird and strange), and her studying of television, magazines, and the mannerisms of people, she's beginning to understand a little bit of the world and of humans.
Because of this, she comes off as extremely naive and innocent, and is very gullible. To top that all off, she's very flaily and is a complete klutz; she's almost always tripping and faceplanting over her own feet and, well, sometimes over nothing. However, it's also because of this childish naivety and innocence that makes her endearing to people. Kobato has a big heart that is always in the right place, and she is a genuinely kind and sincere person. She's the type of girl who will find herself doing odd jobs for strangers right on the get-go, even when she gets no pay in return. And though she also tries to help and heal people's hearts in order to fulfill her wish, she does genuinely care about people and her intentions are always pure and good. She's very compassionate, and seeing other people suffer or get hurt deeply saddens and hurts her too, even when she hardly knows the person. That's why she's always trying to come up with different things and ideas to bring up the spirits and cheer up the people she meets (such as setting up a bazaar to help Sayaka pay off her debts), no matter how silly it may be. She's always trying to help random passersby, even when most of the time she usually fails. Kobato's also the kind of person who will immediately step up to defend someone, no matter how fragile, small, and easily frightened she may be. She'll always come into the aid of her friends, or of anyone when they need her, and she's truly dedicated to healing the wounds and the pain in people's hearts.
Another thing about Kobato is that she's full of determination and enthusiasm, going at everything in full-steam. Whenever she has an idea in her head, a heart to heal, or a person to help, she'll do everything she can to do it, no matter what the circumstances are (e.g. running at full speed in the sweltering heat just to get Ioryogi-san a beer). She's also extremely persistent, and will never give up no matter how much she fails. One of her famous catchphrases after all, is "I'll do my best next time!" She's an optimist, and tries to see the good in everything. The only thing terrible to her are the tragedies and the pain that breaks people's hearts, and she's trying her best, in her own silly and sometimes downright "idiotic" ways, to rid themselves of that and heal them.
Kobato also seems to have no memories of her past, or is just very good at hiding it, and thus she only focuses in the present time, in the here and now. This is why one of the main things she's constantly thinking of is healing people to be able to fulfill her wish, and at the same time, doing it in a truly heartfelt and genuine way.
Strengths/Weaknesses: ✔ Kobato is quite the optimist. She almost always sees the glass half-full, and even when she's in a sad situation, she'll always try to find a solution to it, to make everything sunshiny once again.
✔ She's really very helpful. Kobato will always stop to help, even when it's only a random passerby on the street. And she will never ask for a reward, or even a mere "thank you" too. Just the satisfaction of making someone smile and be happy, and knowing that perhaps she's healed someone and has filled up her bottle with a healed heart is enough for her.
✔ Kobato's probably one of the few ridiculously kind, sincere, and genuine people you will ever meet. She always has good and pure intentions, and her heart's always in the right place, even when the stuff she does makes her look quite idiotic sometimes.
✔ She's also very determined and persistent. Once she gets an idea in her head, or a promise she made to someone, she will do everything she can to try and get it done. If she fails, she'll always get back up and do her very best once again. So if you see Kobato giving up on something, you'll immediately know that something's not quite right.
✔ Kobato is very sympathetic. She easily gets sad and upset just by seeing someone sad and upset -- even someone she doesn't know all that well, and she'll even be more determined to try and help that person with whatever problems they had. Never mind the fact that most of her ideas on how to "help" are sometimes too silly or impossible, but hey, it's the thought that counts, right?
✔ No matter how small, easily frightened, or fragile she may seem to be, Kobato will always stand up and defend someone important to her, or even if it's just a kid who's being bullied, or an old woman who's being harrassed.
✔ Oh, and yes, apparently she can also sing quite well, as seen at the "hanami" when she sang and everyone cheered on her and asked her to sing another song.
✗ Kobato tends to sleep late and then wake up very late, which makes her a bit tardy when it comes to appointments, work schedules, and the like.
✗ Can be creeperish. Like, seriously. She'll jump out of nowhere or directly run towards you and beg, "Please let me heal you!" This usually doesn't end too well for her, though she never gets the hint and doesn't ever give up.
✗ Her kindness and naivety can easily be taken advantage of. Kobato's the type of person you can easily rope into doing stuff for you, who can easily be bossed around into doing menial jobs and the like just by giving her a stupid reason into doing it -- such as "This is a test of determination!" or "A true lady will do her chores without having to be asked!". Stuff like that, heh.
✗ She knows little of the world, having only been educated by magazines, television, and manga. Some common knowledge that everyone would know so well could be new and shiny to Kobato.
✗ "Dobato" (Stupid pigeon). She has a tendency to take most of the things she sees, hears, and reads absolutely literally. Kobato's the girl who would most probably take an idiom, a joke, or a playful teasing literally and be a little sad or upset about it if it's directed at her, and she also would not be able to detect sarcasm. She's the master of the direct, after all.
✗ Really clumsy. She will trip and faceplant on just about anything.
✗ She sometimes tends to have a short attention span.
✗ Fail when it comes to drawing and handicrafts. She's an expert, however, at creating "bizarre unidentified lifeforms". Seriously, she thinks
this is a "bunny", and she gets really upset when Ioryogi-san calls it a "penguin".

Samples
First Person Sample: [The first thing that appears in the screen is a really huge brown eye. So huge in fact, that it fills the entire screen. The eye blinks once, twice, and then it squints. And then suddenly, this huge brown eye begins to talk.]
Eeeh?? I can't see anything!
[Except, not really. The eye pulls back to show a very perplexed and confused looking girl who seems to be flailing a lot.]
I really don't know how to work this thing. Is there something wrong with it? Uwaa, if only Ioryogi-san were here!!
[She begins to fiddle with the PokeGear once more, tapping it twice with her hand, and when that doesn't work, she begins pressing a couple of buttons, sometimes altogether. Nothing seems to happen, and she's still blissfully unaware that the video is still going on. The video suddenly looks shaky as she crouches beside the Happiny she met earlier, and her face appears on screen once again, looking really worried.]
What am I going to do...? And the bottle isn't with me too. Ioryogi-san is going to be so mad at me when he finds out I lost it...
[The Happiny begins to make noises, and Kobato reaches out to pet and play with it, completely forgetting about the device. The video is still going on though, and it clearly shows a kind of sadness, even when a small smile is gracing her features. Someone fill her in?]
Third Person Sample: Things were a lot more different without Ioryogi-san. She didn't have anyone who would yell (or firebreathe) at her whenever she acted silly or came up with a crazy idea; she didn't have anyone who would knock some sense into her whenever she did something remotely foolish, or someone who would repeatedly remind her of the reason she came into Earth whenever she went off her path, figuratively. And truth be told, she missed all that, no matter how harsh or abusive her firebreathing mentor was with her sometimes -- because she knew that even if he was like that, he did care for her and was constantly looking out for her, and that he was probably worried about her now. She also missed Sayaka-san, and Landlady-san, and the little children... and perhaps to a little bit, Fujimoto-san. Actually, no. She doesn't miss him at all.
Fortunately, it didn't take all that long for Kobato to adjust. She had met a lot of interesting people, and she also had Momo-chan, a Happiny who had been with her ever since she had arrived. She also knew a lot about camping (albeit, quite an unconventional kind of camping -- sleeping inside large hollow logs or under a big cherry tree), so she was quite alright. She had just one problem though. How was she supposed to heal hearts when she didn't have her bottle with her?! It was the one problem that plagued Kobato's mind -- that is, when she wasn't running away from scary-looking Pokemon. She was seated under a Cherry Tree, resting with her Happiny after they both spent hours playing with the cherry tree petals and with each other. She knew she shouldn't just be playing; after all, she had hearts to heal so she could fulfill her wish. But what was she to do really, without Ioryogi-san and without the bottle?
She then began to try her hardest to concentrate. If Ioryogi-san were here, what would he say to her? Would he tell her to go ahead and play? Of course not! Would he tell her to go fetch a beer for him? Well... yes, perhaps, but that had nothing to do with her wish! Oh, this was so hard. Kobato began to think long and hard, as hard as her brain would let her... and then it hit her. She could still go and heal hearts! She was sure that the bottle was with Ioryogi-san, and if she could heal hearts here in Johto, then the bottle would surely fill with the hearts she had healed! And Ioryogi-san would know that she wasn't slacking off!! "Alright!" She began, pumping her fist excitedly in the air. "Let's go heal hearts, Momo-chan!"
