The Maid and Her Lady Knight Part 10

The day we flew back, everybody felt tense.

Emily was on her toes and had her hands full of getting us all to stick to the timetable.

Nigel tried to keep himself calm. He is scared of flying like no one else in the team. Miranda just stared ahead and kept biting her lip. I tried to distract her, telling her of my family and what I am looking forward to see in New York again. Where my family uses to be and that they are probably going to make quiet a scene at the airport.

In the plane was also Irv Ravitz and as Miranda had assured me earlier, he didn't notice me at all.

Introducing me as an old friend she grinned as he was all nice and charming. “So fake” she mouthed behind his back and I really had troubles not to laugh out loudly.

We were sitting on a table with Emily and Nigel together when the plane took off. I grabbed his hands and held them tightly while he was shaking like a leaf. Emily was finally relaxing and fell asleep almost instantly when we left the ground. Well and Miranda, she stared again. Outside the window she was sitting next to. Soon she rummaged through her bag and got her cell out and started listening to music with headphones. Her eyes were closed then and her index finger tapped in rhythm to the songs she was hearing. When Nigel had been calm I also tried to get some sleep, with the outcome that I woke up, cuddling at Miranda's shoulder. My arms wrapped around her's tightly.

I looked across the table and saw Emily and Nigel both raising an eyebrow. The others on the plane were all busy with themselves...but Miranda looked down at me now. My movement of sitting up straight again and pulling my arms away had caught her attention.

“Morning. Slept well?”

“Uh yes. How long was I out?”

“We are almost home, so kind of 7 hours.” She wiggled her arm a little and sighed. “Though taking my arm as a scale, forever. Pins and needles.”

Why hasn't she pushed me away? You can imagine now but it didn't make any sense to me during that time.

The plane had landed, we all grabbed out luggage and slowly went out into the sunshine. Miranda, the only one without her bags, was greeted by her chauffeur who tipped his head and got inside to get her things.

It was awkward. She seemed to search for something.

“Where are they?” Her eyes were burning into her driver's face. He put the luggage in the car and cleared his throat. “With their father. They told me to say they are sorry but the weather is too great to not use the pool at his place. The young ladies will join you tomorrow evening at dinner.”

“Oh. Alright.”

During that scene I stood a few meters away, watching her the whole time. Her shoulders were up but her body screamed sadness, disappointment and defeat. I caught her eyes but in that exact moment I suddenly felt pulled in a bunch of arms and lost the connection with her. My family had found the plane and was now covering me in kisses and hugs. My brother and sister, my gran and my parents were all there and bombed me with questions. When I finally had a clear sight again the car had vanished and so had Miranda. My stomach knotted and I suddenly felt very sick.

“Shit.”
