I slept like a dead woman till noon the next day. Miranda had been long gone again for fulfilling her schedule, the only thing indicating she had been here between the dinner the night before and then, was a used coffee mug and her shoes from the dinner tossed into a corner.
Seems like not even she was free from the pain.
Getting myself ready, I realized how much better I felt already. The dizziness had gone and so I started cleaning the suite. It sounds stupid but I didn't want my former colleagues to clean up after me. When the maid stopped by I invited her for a cool drink and let her rest, pretending she worked here. She had been so grateful.
Around 4pm, while I was just reading the newspaper, the door opened and an exhausted looking Miranda came in. Pushing the door shut and leaning against it.
“Good afternoon.. you look like it was a perfect idea from me to have some coffee ready.”
Her eyes closed and she exhaled deeply. “God you are a heaven's sent.”
Feeling almost giddy by that sentence I rushed over to the kitchen area and prepared a cup, bringing it over to her then.
“There, now slip out off your shoes and get comfortable.”
Miranda did so and flopped down on the couch, quiet not elegantly so.
Drinking her coffee she relaxed and sighed.
“I wondered..well if I could call my family. So they are warned but I don't have a cellphone and I didn't want to let the hotel bill explode.”
Looking over at me she chuckled. “Oh don't worry, I always have a package. Telephone costs included, since I need to call people in so many countries. So go ahead.”
When I called my parents that I would come home they had been ecstatic. Of course they wanted to know how I managed to finally pay for a ticket but I only looked around the corner at Miranda and said “There is a friend of mine, she's a life-savior”
Miranda looked up at that and smiled sweetly, winking.
After I had finished the call, I sat next to Miranda while she was talking about her day. Whenever she took a sip from the dark brew I wondered how soft her lips would be. Would she always taste like coffee?
“Andréa?”
Yes it happened that I just stared and totally wouldn't listen anymore. Oh and then I blushed. Feeling my cheeks heat up, I bit my lip.
“Sorry. I was in thoughts, what did you say?”
“I saw that. I said we could go and buy the groceries together, since you seem to feel better. You choose the ingredients for dessert and I will prepare it. So we both will have a challenge...Are you drifting off again??”
“No..no totally with you. Sounds like a great plan.”
“You are beet-red. What were you thinking about?”
I was so sure she could read my mind. Her eyes were searching for mine but I just found my hands so much more interesting in that moment. Clearing my throat I mumbled some nonsense and got up.
She had let it go back then but would ask again the next days.
