I wonder if Castiel's good intentions mirror Ruby's
I could see him manipulating Dean, though hating himself while doing it, if he thought it was God's will. He's done that before, though came to his sense when Anna challenged Castiel's orders.
I find it interesting, too, that Ruby evoked immediate suspicion, both from the boys themselves, particularly Dean, and also from the fanbase. I wonder what game they might be playing with a character that was generally well received and more or less considered to be a good guy, if not immediately trustworthy.
Which makes me wonder if they're playing us, the audience, because of this tendency. We're certainly ripe for it. Castiel certainly was well received, which gives the writers more to work with in terms of messing with our perceptions. It's just a question of how far they're willing to risk.
I have to confess, now that I've thought of it, I'll be disappointed if they don't make Castiel into this kind of a complex character that allows both Sam and Dean to be complex and multi-layered themselves. I don't want The Show to chicken out.
