Shadows. Most of them are like big globs of black goo. Others are larger. Some wear fruity masks, some don't.

Tartarus is our school during the Dark Hour. It gets all big and twisty and complicated.

Shadows live inside Tartarus and only come out sometimes.

Aaaand that's as basic as this explanation gets.
