Anyone wiyh a passing interest in television animation may recognise that name. Based in Manchester, in England thaey`ve produced some fantastic stuff, Dangermouse, Jamie and the Magic Torch to name just two.

But the reason I`m such a fan is their stop-motion animation work.
I`ll put a cut in here, as images and waxing lyrical are to follow.

The models and sets produced for their version of "Wind-in-the-Willows" are simply breath-taking. However,Today I sing the praises of an oddly-forgotten masterpiece which a few of my friends and I remember and cherish. Based around the visuals of noted fantasy artist Rodney Matthews, ladies and gentlemen, may I present

LAVENDER CASTLE

This was a science-fantasy series, with elements of steampunk and swashbuckling pirate movies. The sets, were stunning, just look at this engine room set

the plot revolved around a crew of lovable eccentrics searching for the titular fortress, a palce of peace and harmony, while persued by the evil Dr Argon. My only problem with the show (and a niggling tiny one) was that as the creator Rod Matthews is a devout Christian sometimes the morals and metaphors were a little heavily piled on, but on a whole, it was a delight to the eye and heart, so wonderfully british too, where else could one see a timber-framed, thatched spacecraft?

british, sci fi, children's tv, 90s
