"Children of the Stones"
Another of my beloved spooky 1970's kids telefantasy shows. It was shown in 1977 on ITV,and last I heard was available on region 0 DVD.
The exterior shots were filmed around the Wiltshire village of Avebury, not far from Stonehenge, and home to the biggest stone circle in England, so large that it encircles the village.
The plot revolves around the stone circle, and that somehow history within the village (named Millbury in the story) is a cycle that has been endlessly repeating itself since the Late Stone Age.
A druid-priest witnessed an exploding supernova and planned to use the combined psychic essences of the local tribe, his own magic and the power of the stone circle to access and wield the energy released by the exploding star in order to totally dominate the collective will of the tribe. He is challenged by 2 outsiders , who foil his plans, causing the destruction of the altar stone, the focal point of the circle - unleashing a wild tidal wave of "magic" that destroys the druid and turns the tribe into stone.
Fast forward to the 1970's
The reincarnated Druid, now an astronomer is planning to use the same psychic/magic technique to controll the villagers, only now the supernova has become a black hole, and the resulting psychic energy will be negative in nature. Enter two newcomers to the village, a father and son (The father played by Blake's 7's Gareth Thomas). The cycle begins again.....
The whole thing was as spooky as hell. Discordant choral voices formed much of the soundtrack, only adding to the general eeriness. The show has been called "The Wickerman for Kids" by some .
