BRACING
Can't Correct Scoliosis Curves
in Adults
It would be wonderful if we could be cured of scoliosis. Unfortunately, there is no cure. Structural scoliosis curves can only be corrected by surgery. Although, bracing can stop the progression of scoliosis in children who are skeletally immature, it cannot permanently correct those curves. Despite that fact, I've seen a number of web sites that make claims of the ability to permanently reduce scoliosis curves in both children and adults. While that may be true if one has small, non-structural (functional) curves, it can never be true for structural curves.
Over time, the curvature of the spine will cause changes to the endplates of the vertebrae. Look at the illustration of vertebrae from a typical scoliosis curve above. Note how the shapes of each of the involved vertebrae have changed. Now, think of a brace being applied to straighten the curve. While the discs are still in good shape, the spine can be straightened out by pushing on the convex side of the curve. However, the boney structure of the vertebrae will remain unchanged. So, when the brace or other force is removed, the spine will curve again. To get permanent correction, the force straightening the spine must be continuous (such as the internal fixation devices implanted during scoliosis correction surgery). Don't be one of those taken in by these quacks.
