So, Glee was on last night? And the only thing I really have to say is that the football player kid? Is way, way, way taller than Lea. I don't even know their character names. I feel like I should, as excited as I was about the premiere. That's got to be annoying as all hell to frame their scenes together.
I was not expecting as many songs as they did, which was awesome, but I was also expecting better sync between the scenes and the studio tracks. Like, Goldigger, yay! But I am not at all sure whether that was (supposed to be?) Will rapping the whole time?
I am not as excited for S6 of SYTYCD as I thought I was going to be, and I feel like I'd sort of already seen the episode, from the teaser clips they showed during S5. Like, I don't ever want to see that solo from Ryan, ever again, but I really loved it the first time I saw it.
I've been trying to stay away from casting spoilers, but I heard some things from early in Vegas week about returning favorites that has me not optimistic, so I'm just trying to not get all invested in the audition shows.
I've also been, uh, borrowing S2 of SYTYCD Canada.
Other than the fact that I sort of hate the host (Leah Miller from MuchMusic) and the standard panel of judges (I don't think I've listened to one of Jean-Marc Generaux's critiques yet), I'm mostly enjoying it. I don't think they package the dancers as well as they do on the US show, because I'm having a really hard time keeping their names straight.
Blake McGrath (from S1 of SYTYCD) sort of drives me insane, more or less the same way that Tyce does now, but he choreographed a routine this week, which meant he didn't spend 20 minutes being bitchy on camera. Routine was smoking hot, too. Emanuel is apparently a famous figure skater? Like national champion-type skater? I think the last Olympic-level skating I watched was when Elvis Stojko was competing, so. Kim is Vincent from last season's girlfriend, and I think the only thing that I love more than Lisa and Vincent's routines is the idea of Kim and Vincent dancing together, even though I'm pretty sure they're on opposite ends of the spectrum. I don't have anything against the tiny blonde (or brunette, for that matter) contemporary dancers, but I think Kim is my fave female this season.
Corynne and Austin lucked out getting matched up and with their choreography. Austin says "I want to show that I can dance, that it's not just trick, trick, trick." Well maybe you shouldn't have spent your whole solo doing flips around the stage, then, honey. He reminds me of Isaak from last season, except that I think Austin can actually dance, and I'm really surprised that the teenyboppers aren't voting enough to keep him out of the bottom 3.
Cody and Melanie are the cutest things in the history of ever, and yet they totally killed (good-killed) a krump routine last week, and this week they totally murdered (bad-murdered) their mambo but I think its because their characters in the dance were sort of happy and fun and they weren't throwing themselves into it. And the judges loved it, but I just did not see it. I almost listened to Jean-Marc's critique to see what he said about it. I'm just spoiled by Dancing with the Stars ballroom, I think.
Tara-Jean and Everett (tap dancer!) are also made of cute and reasonably competent. I think they'll do well. Watching their routine though, I'm starting to wonder whether I'm remembering the SYTYCD US ballroom routines as better than they really were, compared to Canada. It's probably just that I'm remembering the late-season routines.
Jaymee Rae and Daniel had a fabulous dancehall routine last week that I'm tempted to upload to youtube so I can't link to it.
Benji Schwimmer choreographed a "Modern-day, almost apocalyptic hustle" for Nicolas and Jenna Lynn which was waaaaay dumbed-down from the stuff he's choreographed on the US show, and they pretty much danced it worse than any disco I've seen on the show. Poor little happy b-boy Nicolas. He's like a puppy that needs adopting, and training.
I didn't even bother watching Natalie and Danny's rumba. The music was weird, and her first 10 seconds of movement just totally did not work for me. I still have no idea how someone as perky as her ended up identifying as a krumper.
And in other singing-and-dancing news, Ellen Degeneres is the new judge on American Idol? Am I the only one who finds the prospect of her sitting between Kara and Simon to be absolutely hilarious? I wonder if they'll change the seating. I'm sort of WTF about the choice in general, but I just can't picture how that's going to work, and I wonder how similar her comments are going to be to her guest-judging on SYTYCD, or whether she'll leave the schtick at the door. Or! If she'll just blatantly do impressions of the other judges, which would actually be awesome, like the play-at-home game of let's anticipate whether Simon is going to call someone a lounge singer or a bad karaoke act, or say it was brilliant.
And Maks and Carina (Karina? whatev.) broke up. Aw. Of course, now Maks is free to be rumor-milled with whoever he's paired with on this season of Dancing with the Stars, if he's on it? IDK whether he is, with the Broadway thing. Is that over? I am so lazy with the google today.
