The Cape - anyone watching this?

An honest cop on a corrupt police force is framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. Forced into hiding and desperate to reunite with his wife and son, he recreates himself as a caped hero, determined to bring justice back to the city he loves.

During the NBC coverage of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the person interviewing Summer Glau and David Lyons, who clearly had not seen the promo materials, asked if there would be romantic tension between their characters. That would be a no.

The good news is that I didn't hate the premiere of The Cape nearly as much as I hated No Ordinary Family. During the first two episodes, which aired tonight, I found myself pretty much constantly thinking that it wasn't comic-book enough for comic books, and wasn't realistic enough to be a crime/family drama.

There was one instance of massive ineptitude on the part of the arch-villain (or at least his security staff), with an associated moment of The Cape really failing at negotiation with terrorists criminals; one moment of "seriously, you don't recognize that guy?"; and one moment of me trying to figure out where The Cape was having a PTSD episode or just freaking out for no good reason. Also, several times where I wanted to throw a shoe through the TV screen at Summer Glau as she delivered some really horribly mawkish dialogue, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't her fault.

I'm generally pretty fond of non-superpowered superheroes and villains, and I feel like I'd be happy to watch villain-of-the-week episodes forever, but I'm going to lose patience with the family thing pretty quickly. I'd be up for maybe 8 episodes, and then I'm very much going to want him to clear his name so he can go home, at which point he can be, like, cop by day, vigilante by night. I would totally be up for him having to decide when due process gets precedence, and when he just wants to take care of bad guys himself. Particularly since his wife is apparently a lawyer?

They're having a Submit Your Villain contest through January 28th.
