New York Times:
Does Your Language Shape How You Think? I haven't read all of this yet, because I fried my brain today. But I will read it, someday! Mostly, I was surprised to make it through the first page without a reference to 1984.
At West Point, Hidden Gay Cadets Put in Spotlight - I assume this has been in the media elsewhere, but I haven't really been keeping up this week.
My Must-Have Looks for This Fall. Even though I am not a fashion person, it makes me sad that the only one of those people I recognize is Whitney Port, who was...Lauren's? co-intern on The Hills.I like multi-unit housing, but as a relatively independent person, I hate the lack of control over things that homeowners would typically control. For example: The sprinklers in front of the unit next door have been running for at least 18 hours now. The timer, which runs each zone for maybe 20 minutes from 10pm-2 am or so, is clearly not working. However, because it is not an emergency, the emergency... uh, what's the name of that thing where you pay people to answer the phone? Answering service? Would not take the message to pass on to the property management company, so we had to leave a message on the non-emergency line. And hope someone checks it. There's a good chance the sprinklers will be watering the pavement until Monday afternoon.
I have no idea where the sprinkler system controls are. I don't think I'm allowed to know where they are. I find it hard to believe that the unit owners couldn't be trusted to know the location of the off switch if, say, something was broken and flooding, but maybe that would qualify as an emergency.
