23 - Who's to say I'm just another stereotype?

Jun 18, 2009 12:03

A stray kitten found me on my way to my shift this morning and seems very attached. He's a little bit of a runt but in good health from what I can tell. He seems to like my shoulder as well.

[a few pen taps]

Whoever came into my room two nights ago to hang those curst things needs to confess. It's extremely rude and I do not enjoy working my way ( Read more... )

[She goes on over, her kitten on her shoulder. Knock, knock.]

[Answers the door with a slight smile, Lucky looking up from between her ankles.]

Hey, Honor... aw, he's a cutie, isn't he.

[Scritches behind shoulderkitten's ears and steps away from the door.]

C'mon in.

[The kitten leans forward a little, moving his head to get a better scratch.]

He is.

[She walks in.]

Thanks for... letting me come over.

[Politeness was best, after all.]

No problem... so what was it you wanted to ask me about?

[Heads for the kitchen.]

Want some water or anything?

No, thank you.

[Honor reaches up and pulls her kitten off her shoulder where he had been digging into her flesh, moving him to her arms. He didn't appear any more comfortable there, though.]

It's... ummm...

[She looks away.]

I want to wear... skirts... more often. But I don't know how.

Skirts? Oh, well that's no problem... the only difference between wearing skirts and pants is that you have to be more careful when you're jumping over stuff.

At least, for you... I don't think you'd like long skirts very much. Something like this would be good for you.

[She plucks at her dress, which goes down to about her knees.]

A loose one too, so it doesn't restrict your movement.

[Honor quits trying to force the kitten into a proper position in her arms and the black one jumps right back onto her shoulder, settling nicely as if he had every right to be there.]

You're certain that people won't...

[She bites her lip.]

Refuse to let me work?

[Has to smile at the kitten's antics. Lucky meanwhile is trying to climb up onto her head... ducks slightly to give him an easier time.]

I'm sure, Honor. For one thing, you've proved a whole bunch of times that you're a good fighter and weaponsmith. For another, there are women all over the Sphere who work in dangerous jobs, regardless of whether or not they wear skirts.

[She's a little surprised at Cara's insistence. Some reaction inside her thinks that women are forced into a singular role, and that she's disobeying rules by choosing another path. But it's true that women in the Sphere aren't frowned upon for doing what they want. She sighs.]

I had a memory, once a long time ago, of myself and what I assume to be my brother, changing ourselves. I was supposed to be dressed like a boy, and I saw him dressed in skirts. My hair was even cut to be this short.

[She pets her nameless kitten.]

But if it won't matter any more, maybe skirts wouldn't be... so bad.

[To be honest, the thought of women being inferior or disallowed from things just based on femininity is foreign to Cara, but everyone's home is different.]

I'm not saying it doesn't matter what your home was like, or what your memories of there were. But, well... those restrictions don't exist here. And who says you wouldn't be able to knock the socks off of them and prove that you can be a girl and a warrior there?

[Smiles.]

Skirts are nice. It might take a little getting used to, but they're good for summer anyway and they're, well, pretty.

[Honor smiles a little.]

I think that was my plan.

[Perhaps not worded quite like it, but it seemed familiar.]

I think I would enjoy it. The dress... wasn't so bad.

I bet you'll do it, too.

And it is nice to dress up sometimes and feel pretty. You looked nice.

[That earns a faint smile.]

Thank you.

[She bites a lip again, still a little uncertain how people might react.]

You're sure... people won't... force themselves on me? It seems to happen when girls are in skirts.

[Her mind floats back to the ball, where Ace begged her to dance.]
