Still shivering slightly, Cassie came walking out of the mudroom, dressed in her Wonder Girl costume as she'd just returned from patrol and training. It had been a beautiful day and it would have almost been fun it just hadn't been so darn cold. She rubbed her hands together and tried to force herself to stop shivering as she made her way across the common area to her room.
Jill was trying to make some tea - she couldn't stretch the way she had in the past, and even as she stooped to get the tin of it, she sucked in a breath - and then Cassie came in. Jill jerked back, a pained sound slipping from her lips as she looked at the other girl. "Oh! Cassie, hullo. I- Would you like some tea? I was about to make some." She had a feeling that the other girl didn't like her, even though she didn't really know why.
Cassie had looked over at the small pained sound as per instinct, but when she saw it was just Jill, she rolled her eyes. "Nah, I'm good." She said and kept on going.
Jill saw the eyeroll, and the words leapt out of her mouth, sounding cross - mostly because she was, due to her ribs, and this person- this girl who she'd tried to be nothing but nice too. "I'm sorry, do you have a problem?"
Stopping in her tracks, Cassie just turned around and looked at Jill as if she said something crazy. "Excuse me?"
"I asked you if you have a problem, because last time I checked, my presence alone doesn't usually elicit somebody rolling their eyes at me." She stood, one hand on the shelf, since she'd used it to pull herself up.
"That's a surprise to me." Cassie quipped, not exactly bothered by Jill's defensive tone as she crossed her arms.
She sucked in a breath - not a good plan, because her ribs protested. "What have I ever done to you?" She stared incredulously at the other girl. "I didn't do anything to deserve your dislike."
"Oh, I wouldn't call it dislike as so very much unimpressed." Cassie replied simply with a small shrug. "I don't know what Robin saw in you to make you a Titan, but I've yet to see it."
Her throat tightened, that little voice that had been quiet since she'd talked with Dick on the beach back full force. "You barely even know me. It's not like all of us came from your universe with a pedigree."
Now Cassie just laughed. Hard. "Do you see me having problems with Dairine? No, it's not that you didn't come from my universe. It's that you don't have a backbone and you obviously don't have the instincts. If I didn't trust Robin, I'd wonder what the hell he was thinking."
"Just because I'm polite doesn't mean that I don't have a backbone, and I'd like to see you- without your powers- try to- What do you mean I don't have the instincts?" Her voice was rising, her hand pressed to her side.
"Have you seen me be hindered one bit by not having my powers? I don't think so. I was trained by the best before I even got them. And as far as instincts...how are the ribs?" She just smiled.
"Robin trains me just like he trained you," she said, then was brought up short. "What the bl- What in the world is that supposed to mean?! They're broken."
Cassie snorted softly. "I meant Artemis and Wonder Woman, but nice try." Then she shook her head. "If you knew Robin at all or even read the situation, they wouldn't be."
If you knew Robin at all... "I do know him," she said, her voice catching. "He's my best friend." She was staring at Cassie. "I couldn't just leave him out there to die. It was miles back here, and by the time I made it he could have left, or frozen, or- You weren't even there!"
"Robin? Freeze to death? Please. He's better then that. What you should have realized is that no matter what you are to him, you were not going to be the one to make him do anything. Not even I could do that. So you should have gotten someone who could. It's what would have been the best for everyone. You wouldn't have broken ribs and Rob wouldn't have to feel guilty about hurting you." Now her voice was sharp, because no matter what she felt about Jill, Robin was her best friend too and she hated that he had to feel bad about Jill's mistake.
"He's better then freezing to death? Cassie, I ran into Nightwing on the way from where Robin was. If Morgan hadn't gotten him, he would either be dead, or missing fingers, toes, or worse to frostbite. I did the right thing-" Her eyes were starting to water - not because she was upset, but because the muscles around her ribs were starting to spasm from the pain.
Jill's logic didn't do anything for Cassie. "Well it was a good thing Morgan knew what to do, isn't it?"
Jill hunched her shoulders as she tried to breathe - shallow and even, that's what hurt the least, but it was coming in big, gulping gasps instead. "Yes. Yes, it was."
She looked up at Cassie. "I have just as much right to be here as you do. I'm a Titan."
Cassie was back to not really caring and she just shrugged again. "Prove it then. Because so far? Not seeing it."
"How? What would make you suddenly believe that I'm good enough? Because for all that you say that you don't doubt me because you trust Robin, it's not really ringing true."
"Why are you so worried what I think about you anyway?" Cassie asked. "Because if you were so sure of yourself, my opinion shouldn't matter."
"Because we're theoretically a team, and I have to live with you. That, and you're important to Dick and Robin." Jill pursed her lips, her hand still on her side.
"So I have to like you? Believe me, that's not a requirement." Though she did as she mentally put Jill and Slo-bo in the same category.
"You don't have to like me." That wasn't the point.
The point was that Cassie needed to trust her - to trust Robin's judgment of her, so that when they were in a fight, they could work as a team and not doubt one another.
"I..." This was pointless, and no matter what she did, she was making it worse.
"I need to go lay down." She did blame the tearing up of her eyes on her ribs - they did hurt.
It was as good of a reason as any.
Cassie just watched her go before turning back and going into her own room with a small smile.
