Of all the absurd things to think, Jill woke up feeling cold. Not cool, for all that it probably wasn't winter outside, but cold. It probably had something to do with what she slept in (or the lack thereof), and if you add into the face that she seemed to be lying on the carpet ( Read more... )

In another room not far from where the girls were waking up, Edmund rolled over and pushed his face deeper into the pillow. There was a shaft of sunlight from somewhere pushing at his eyes, prodding them to open, but Edmund, often a very stubborn boy, refused to budge on the subject of his sleep. Odd, he thought in a muddled sort of way, that there should be sun on his face when his bedroom had no windows ( ... )

Peter opened one eye, about to berate Edmund for waking him, when he realized that something wasn't quite right. Not right at all. Ed was kneeling on carpet, the pillow his face was on felt like real feathers, and he was cold, of all things. He blinked quickly, pushing himself up onto an elbow, brow furrowed at his brother. "Ed? What on earth?"

"Not likely," Ed answered dryly, but the how of this wasn't what Peter was asking. More the what.

"It's England," he said, still keeping his voice hushed. "I haven't got Honour, I haven't got my sword and Eustace is still asleep!" Ed was seized by a sudden dismal feeling, and looked with wide eyes at Peter. "You remember, right? You haven't forgotten the island or anything?"

Peter shook his head, even more confused. "Eustace?" He sat up, then, glancing around the room. They were most definitely in England, Honour was nowhere to be found, and that was absolutely their cousin. He looked back at Ed, shaking his head as he swung his legs out over the edge of the bed. "No, I remember the island, for sure." Jill. Susan. He glanced up. "Did you just get up? Is Susan here?"

He could breathe a small sigh of relief, that he wasn't actually alone in this trying to figure out what to do. Edmund shrugged helplessly, shaking his head. "I just woke up. Here. I haven't seen hide nor hair of anyone else."

Ugh. Peter ran a hand through his hair, glancing around the room, taking stock. Eustace was out cold, tucked under the covers and looking perfectly content. He hadn't heard anything yet, but he recognized the room, at the very least. "We're at Professor Kirke's," He said, pushing himself to his feet. "Do you think the girls are here? Should we look for them?" He didn't know why he thought asking Ed would get any kind of easy answer, but he still needed to ask. This was just... bizarre.

He shrugged again, but not so helplessly. "Why not?" Ed said, answering both questions. Spying a suitcase tucked beneath the bed he'd woken up in, Edmund went for it and was pleased to find clothes. And a baggage tag with his name on it.

"...This is mine," he said slowly, frowning at Peter. "It says it's my suitcase, but these aren't my clothes."

He watched him tugging at the suitcase, and stood up, kneeling next to the bed. There was, almost expectedly, a suitcase under the bed, with his name on it. He flipped it open, looking through the clothes. "Actually." He recognized half the clothes from when he was studying with the Professor. "This has my name on it, but some of these are definitely mine."

He woke to the sound of voices he hadn't heard in quite some time-- not together, at any rate, and that was enough to give him a bit of pause as he sat up in bed, rubbing at his eyes.

"Whazzit," he mumbled, meaning What time is it, but then he really opened his eyes and saw Peter and Edmund and shook his head, grinning sheepishly. "How long've I been dozing?" he asked, swinging his legs over the side and getting to his feet. "Is everyone really here already?"

Edmund stared at his cousin for a hard minute. Asleep, half his face pressed into the pillow, Eustace looked more or less as Edmund had known Eustace to look. Like a boy. But this Eustace was closer to Edmund's age, which simply wasn't possible except by magic, and little pieces of information started to fit together in his head, like a puzzle.

"Dunno," he replied, trying to act natural. "We just got up."
