The Mayan calendar ends abruptly at the year 2012. However, while some people think this marks the end of humanity, it marks the end of one era, and the beginning of the next. At this time, for some reason, society will return back to basics, relying only one the bare necessities, and they will give up material goods. Hmm.
Coincidentally, in 2012 the Earth is expected to experience especially strong solar flare activity. Solar flares can interfere with electronic equipment and disrupt technology. What if the solar flares shut everything down all at once for a significant period of time? Hmm?

Haha, just kidding, those are two totally unrelated things, but it's still kinda interesting to think about.
