So anyway, life on Nowhere Island was peaceful and happy. There was no war or tragedy beyond kids having disputes over toys or elders passing away due to old age now and then. Or, you know, wives passing away during childbirth due to the incredibly simplistic medical knowledge of the villagers. In losing his wife, Lighter gained a son, so that much kept him going. Raising a kid on one's own isn't too easy, but the other villagers were more than willing to help raise Fuel to be a happy and healthy boy.
For the next several years, life was uneventful. Then one night, the game started TRAGEDY STRUCK. There were loud noises in the forest and Lighter went out to investigate, leaving Fuel in the safety of the log cabin... so he thought. As it turns out, a wooden cabin is not the safest place to be when the entire forest ends up being on fire. On his way back to get Fuel and bring him to safety, Lighter was assaulted by weird bugs he'd never seen before. They were large, hideous, and spat fire, and every time he beat them down more and more came until he finally collapsed from smoke inhalation.
Luckily, Flint was on his way to check up on the two like a good neighbour and BFF/lifetime rival should. Because he was a player character Flint beat back the flies with no problem and saved Fuel while Thomas brought Lighter to safety. He was uncharacteristically sullen until Fuel showed up, at which point he tried to prove how much of a MAN he was to his son by trying to fix his own broken leg. Yeah, that went well. He went back to being a little bit mopey as he was brought to the inn for proper care, and even said thank you to Flint (surprising everyone else) for saving Fuel. Then he rambled a bit about pig-faced bastards and everything being pitch-black and covered in soot before passing out again.
Later when he woke up, everyone was all worried about something or another but they wouldn't tell him what. Finally he overheard someone talking about the fact that Hinawa and the twins were still lost in the forest and... everyone was helping look for them? WITHOUT HIM? He jumped right out of bed and charged into the forest, despite everyone yelling at him to stop being a stupid stubborn butthead. Eventually while everyone combed the forest, Lucas and Claus were found, and Flint had a touching reunion with his boys.
And then Bronson told him the bad news about Hinawa.

As it turned out, the drago that attacked Hinawa and the boys wasn't... normal. It was made partially of metal. Strange bugs showing up, men wearing pig masks, and now this? What the hell was going on?
A few days later, some traveling merchant came by spouting prophecies of doom related to the very things that just started happening. He said the villagers could be saved as long as they purchased something called a happy box! Lighter called bullshit immediately and was the first to wander away from the crowd to go do something more interesting, but some people actually bought into it.
Over the next few years, the happy box and other technology wormed into the homes of almost everyone in the village, along with this “money” thing and a bunch of self-centered people from far-off lands. Lighter wanted nothing to do with it, and even though his cabin kept getting mysteriously zapped by lightning, he refused to give in and buy a happy box. At least the constant repairs gave him something to do while he avoided going into town. Not only did he have almost nothing in common with the villagers anymore, the forest was infested with weird dangerous chimeras! If only he could convince Fuel to stop going to the bakery. Ah, young love...
As time went by, people started migrating to this big city place. New Pork City or something. Tazmily grew more and more deserted, and Lighter wondered if he should leave too. As much of a stubborn old hermit as he was, he didn't want to be the only one left. Fuel needed other people to grow up around too, right?
BUT THEN. People started coming back because in some far-off place called Final Destination City the evil King P got his butt kicked or something and fell out of power. This is what happened in Lighter's timeline and SBG canon, even if not in actual game canon. Like I said, PARADOXES.

Then the weird stuff started happening. Well, weirder than the talking animal thing. Everyone would turn into a kid or a girl or an animal for a week or what have you. Lighter never really got used to it, but he stopped being surprised at one point. One time he got hit by a cupid bot and banged a Falcon. He already didn't like Falcon that much, but this made him hate him FOREVER.
There was a war. Lighter exhausted himself fighting against the alien invaders, and got himself severely injured in a fight alongside Flint against an alien taking the form first of Hinawa and then of the Mechadrago. He kept trying to escape the infirmary to keep fighting, and succeeded just in time for the FINAL BATTLE. That was the scariest shit he had ever seen.
He had enough of all the craziness of SBG and went back to Tazmily, but found it too slow-paced and peaceful. He'd grown accustomed to the school, damn it. So he had to go back. Fuel eventually tagged along too, which was awesome.
He met the lake kraken and made it his quest to capture it. He still hasn't succeeded despite his various attempts. He did accidentally catch a Farfetch'd, who he decided to keep around and named her Zippo.
Later on, during a lull in the school craziness, he decided to head to Kanto and try this POKEMON TRAINING business. He went to Viridian City! The gym leader was gone. What was with those girls camping out in front of the gym...? Viridian forest was a snap, and Zippo ended up just eating anything that bothered them. Then they reached Pewter City! It was filled with familiar-looking children. Oh, Brock's siblings? Really? Brock was a pretty cool guy. But he didn't want to challenge some replacement, he wanted the real leader! He'd do it once he got back to SBG.
Mountain Moon was a pain in the ass with just a bird but he finally made it to Cerulean! The... leader was gone. Okay. Vermilion? GONE. Celadon? GONE. Saffron? GONE. Fuschia? HOME... but Lighter could not figure out the invisible walls for the life of him and he got kicked out when he tried to just break through them instead. That was when the authorities caught on that he didn't even have a license so what the hell was he doing challenging gyms anyway?! How did he get all the way to Fuschia without a cut HM? What? Walking around the trees!? CHEATING.
So there was this whole legal kerfluffle and a bunch of paperwork and basically Lighter is never allowed to go back to Kanto, and Johto was put on alert as well. YEAH WELL WHATEVER Pokemon training is dumb anyway. Come on Zippo, let's go back to the school.

In-Character 1st person writing sample (journal): Hey. Been a while, huh? Bet I've missed out on a bunch of weird crap. Definitely don't regret that.
So I figure most everyone who was here when I left is still here. For you new guys, name's Lighter. I do repairs and teach wood shop. Don't try to blow stuff up too much. I bet Flint had a real hard time keeping on top of things without me around to do most of the work for him. Ha ha ha!
In-Character 3rd person writing post: Three months? Lighter had been gone a lot longer than he thought. Stupid Kanto place was such a waste of time. Bonding with Zippo was nice and all, but he could have done the same thing here and gotten those stupid badges-- well, no. He still didn't have that license thing. Whatever, Zippo was still a pretty cool pet. He didn't need badges or anything to show how great she was.
Anyway, three months meant there was a lot of times for the school's population to change. Before he left it seemed like new kids came in once a week or something. It took him a few minutes of clicking around the school website, but he finally figured out where to find the list of students and teachers. Great, Falcon was still here. And Fuel, which was good because he was going to get a talking-to otherwise. And Flint, the boys, Hinawa, Knu--
...Wait.
He scrolled up and read over that name five times before it sunk in. Hinawa was alive. She was here. When did that happen?
“Holy hell,” he breathed, leaning away from the monitor in disbelief. What wouldn't this school do next?
