Appearance:
Psychology: For a girl with very little screentime in comparison to the rest of the cast, Mami displays a lot of character; though the depth is scratched, plenty of her is hidden; but presented to us.
Mami is first and foremost, polite. A true lady, if a young one. Sipping tea immediately after blasting a witch to pieces is how she does it. However, her politeness can also be blunt; when speaking with someone she regards with hostility, she'll tell them 'this is the last time we can speak politely, the next time we meet I won't hold back, so please don't cross paths with me again', and then she'll follow up on that by tying them up so they won't interfere with her work. Mami is a veteran; used to not having friends to talk to about being a magical girl and the stress it puts one through. It's a secret, after all, and she has no family. While she had little time to reflect upon making her wish to become a magical girl (dying in a car accident, her wish was to stay alive), she does not regret the wish, and perhaps her only regret would be that she didn't have enough time to think long enough to save her family.
Mami is a lonely girl. There is no one to cry on, there is only being strong. There is no one to eat cake with or get close to, there is only witches and hunting them down. She doesn't glamorize the idea of being a magical girl at all-- in fact, her opinion is the opposite. While she would rather live and be one, she admits it is not a life she would wish on others lest they were ready to jump in-- however, Madoka's promise to fight alongside her out of the desire to help and help those in need sparked warm feelings inside Mami-- indeed, she went into her last fight with a big smile, thinking she would finish it and fight alongside Madoka and no longer be alone... but that's a story with an unhappy end.
Mami has a sense of humor and a hefty need for the protection of others, and maybe just the most quiet need of acknowledgment; but that's something hinted and not outright stated. Though she believes Kyuubey 'picked' Madoka and Sayaka and the outcome of them becoming Puella Magi/Magical girls like her is inevitable, she tells them not to rush the wish they receive out of the contract even if Kyuubey is insistant; she didn't have the luxury to choose, after all. She also quietly urges Sayaka, who is considering giving her wish for a boy she likes who is hospitalized, whether she truly wanted it to be 'his wish', or whether she wanted to be the 'granter of his wish', implying Sayaka's true intentions would end with the boy being indebted to her. The fact that Sayaka didn't deny this and put off her wish for a while implies a lot about Sayaka herself, and also that Mami is wise to the ways of reading people.
A girl who doesn't want to be a loner, but ultimately has to be, a battle maiden for the sakes of people who don't even know who she is. Mami is a selfless girl with her fair share of a few, selfish desires.
Other Skills/Abilities: Mami is a Puella Magi, or magical girl. First of this to note, is that Mami bears a Soul Gem, which is at first described as a gem used to prove the mark of a magical girl, but is actually quite literally a gem containing the girl's soul, leaving the actual body a husk controlled by the gem. It's kind of important! It also serves as the typical 'transformation' device and contains all the powers used by a Puella Magi. Mami's specialty weapon (there are many!) are muskets. Lots and lots of muskets. Her magic allows her to lift her skirt and muskets fall out. She can shake muskets out of her hat. She has a final attack that involves conjuring up a much, much bigger gun to land the final kill on the witch.
Also, Puella Magi become more athletically adept to the point of superheroism. Not super strength, but acrobatic feats that could make a person seriously jealous. Mami is also capable of firing her muskets at an
absurd pace, making it pretty clear that this aptitude with her guns and with her speed are courtesy of the Soul Gem's power.
Other Weaknesses: ... Oh boy. Soul Gems are pretty great sounding, right? Aside from not having your soul in your body, that is. Well, you see, Soul Gems dim and dim with time. You need to defeat witches in order to purify your Soul Gem-- they drop grief seeds which do this. However, if you don't have a grief seed handy for a long amount of time... your Soul Gem will turn into one itself and you will become a mindless witch and have to be killed.
This is where I'd like to bring up a question to the mods: Is there any way I can have Mami consistently purify her Soul Gem in the game's setting? It is really quite important and I hate being a special needs character but... hey. In any case, I'm definitely willing to compromise!
History:
This should sum it up well! Canon Point: Shortly before death, opening the wrong door in the labyrinth.
Reality Description: Mitakihara is a pretty nice city, right? Well, wrong. In fact, for all of humanity, this is wrong. You see, out of our sight, but not out of our minds, exist witches. Witches are responsible for sapping life from humans, for suicides and other atrocities, they are 'born from a curse' and need to be eliminated. This is where Kyuubey comes in, an extraterrestrial gathering energy to prevent the heat death of the universe. Kyuubey approaches girls and offers, through his fantastic powers, one wish, one miracle that can alter reality or give the girl whatever they want-- in exchange for becoming a Puella Magi. A Puella Magi must then fight and kill witches, and it's not something one can take a break from. Gathering Grief Seeds from witches allows a Magi to keep her Soul Gem pure-- a Soul Gem that isn't pure... turns into a witch, and thus the cycle continues and no one involved is happy; perhaps except for Kyuubey, but I'm sure his happiness isn't a factor; he's doing this for the good of the universe, which is where the conflict of the story comes in.
How selfish is a wish, or is there such thing as a truly selfless wish? Is Kyuubey a villain exploiting these girls, or is he truly doing this for the greater good, even at the heartbreaking sacrifice of countless girls? Is there a single selfless character in the story? Being a Puella Magi, or a magical girl, is not about waving a stick around and saying the words and the day is saved. It's a conflict of heart leading down a path of destruction; not a single person emerges smiling-- disregarding the ending, of course, but I'm just nailing the themes of the series' tone down.
