Weird. I don't remember asking to sleep in someone's house... did I pass out, Navi? I should thank whoever--

Navi? What the... everything's gone! Even my clothes? You've gotta be kidding me! How did some bandit even make off with... not good. Not good.

[A confused newcomer is now snooping around his house. At some point he will casually hop out a ( Read more... )

[Zevran is used to the movements of the drones and Cynric by now - they've been unchanged as a family since he's arrived - so when he hears unusual activity in the house while he knows Cynric is hanging out in the front yard with Hephestus, he goes to investigate. Rather cautiously. With a hand on his blades.] What do we have here?

That's okay! he_come_to_town August 23 2010, 04:23:34 UTC
Uh, just a-- do you live here? I was just leaving. I woke up here for some reason.

Really? [Zevran cocks his head, relaxing a bit and taking his hand off the grip of his blade. If nothing else, someone who's just arrived in Mayfield won't have any weapons on them yet, so it's a minimal threat.] I would assume you have been assigned to live here, then. The same thing happened to me some time ago.

One of the many baffling eccentricities of this town. People are spirited away from their homes - which may be any number of different worlds - and wake up in one of these houses with a number of strangers that the town claims is their 'family'. I believe you are punished with brainwashing if you stay away from your assigned house for too long. Some of the family members are permanently brainwashed, one way or another, but some are prisoners like us.

There is a boy named Cynric here that has been assigned as my son; I suppose you have taken the place of the other, brainwashed child that lived here.

...That's the most confusing thing I've ever heard. What's the point of all that?

I haven't the slightest idea. [Zevran laughs. He's more or less adapted to Mayfield's arbitrary insanity by now.] I expect someone finds it amusing. You do have my sympathy; we are in the same boat, after all. But there is little to be done for the moment - or at least little to be done that stands a chance of working.

There has to be something. What have people tried?

Any number of things, though I can really only speak for what few I am personally aware of. For my own part, I tried to burn down a building, which didn't work and got me killed...and I also tried to shoot the Milkman, who is involved in the workings of this town somehow, and he not only magically evaded my attack but brainwashed me into some sort of murderous drone for a day. You could try asking others to hear what else has been tested, of course.

You mean it almost got you killed, right?

No, actually. It is one of the peculiarities of this place; you can die here, but you will be returned to life good as new the next day. It makes the dangers this place represents a little less potent, if no more pleasant.

Oh.

...So are you sure you're not just messing with me? Or... hallucinating or something?

Quite certain. That is not the sort of thing one mistakes, after all.

Right... well, I've been in crazy situations before. I'll figure this out eventually.
