Too soft or too hard?

I used to complain that my bed was too stiff and blamed my sleep issues on it.  My current bed is very nice and comfortable, but each week I find that I have a difficult time falling asleep. I end up sleeping on the couch, which strangely enough is very much like my old stiff bed.
