Does anybody want to write a little software for a tax write-off? My club needs some software and we are concerned about the tax implications of paying an individual for it (and jeopardizing our 501(c)3 status if its not done right). Or if you are familiar with the tax rules for contact work and want to talk about it, let me know. It should be

a) Cash register software. we bought some a couple of years ago, but its really more than we need. And the guy we bought it from (kind of a shareware thing) has refused to update it. Just needs to scan the barcodes, calculate the transaction total, store the transactions in a database, and generate reports from the database. We are probably going to update our barcode generation stuff too, but I think we might be able to get that done in-house. There is a service that we can use, but it would be very expensive for what we need. Everything we have found readily available is for consignment stores that operate daily or charge a fee to print tags which our members would raise holy hell about.

b) No. We have used an accountant in the past to get our books in order, but don't have her on retainer. She is a specialty non-profit accountant and very expensive. Our non-profit status is through our national organization and we file our taxes through them. We pretty much just send them a basic accounting and they handle the rest. I suppose we could call her, but then we would not have the money to spend on the software because the accountant would use up that budget line item :)

I should add that we need it to run on old windows boxes that are left in storage for 360 days out of the year and that we can't expect people with a clue to be in charge in a few years. Our current sale chair has a masters in computer science, but the last sale chair didn't check her email regularly because she is practically computer-phobic.

Now, if you know where I could get 8 touch screens donated or for a grand total of about $500, then we might have something to talk about.
