Original title: Tutorial: Placing HTML tags around all similarly Formatted words at once (in Word)

Tutorial created by

The images were re-uploaded on LJ since Photobucket is no longer free to use / hotlink with images.

Listed below is the method for all LJ/DW users to use html in their fic - if they write their fics in Microsoft Word. I know it has been tremendously useful for me when I first started writing fic, before I'd moved on to Google docs. This works for Microsoft word program on a computer only (doesn't work online as in one drive, etc...)

I’m also posting this here so MODS can direct their new members here, if they want to list this as a “resource” along with phoenixacid’s HTML FORMAT Guide.

This is mostly a re-post. I take no credit for all the hard work!

  1. First of all, you need to tell Word that you want to find all the occurrences of italics. Go to Find and Replace, either by looking for it up in the right-hand corner while you're at the HOME tab, like in the image below:

Or by holding down CTRL and tapping H. The Find and Replace dialogue box will pop up:

  2. Click on the Replace tab; this is where you're going to tell Word to look for all the instances of italics. You can do this two ways:
    • The easy way Is to place your cursor in the text-box beside "Find What", holding down CTRL and tapping I (for italic); you'll see the words "Font:Italic" appear beside "Format" under "Find What". (If you keep holding down CTRL and tapping I, you'll see it cycle through "Font:Not Italic" and then go back to its default blank state.)
    • The harder way is to go down to the bottom left and click on the "More>>" button. It will dropdown to show you more options. Make sure your cursor is in the text-box beside "Find What" and look down to the bottom left. Click on "Format".

When you click on "Format", choose "Font". Under "Font Style", click on Italic and hit "Ok" on the bottom there.

  3. But trust me, use the easy way. You'll have "Font:Italic" appear, as stated before:

  4. Now, you're going to tell Word to put the around each instance of italics. This is the code for it: ^&. So, your Find and Replace options should basically look like this:

  5. Click on "Replace All". Word should now find all instances of italic'ed words and put the around them.
Hope it works! You can tell Word to do the same thing for bold, to; just do CTRL+B in the "Find What" box and place ^& in the "Replace" box.

TIP ONE: This has been tested on Word 2003, and it works for mac, as well.

TIP TWO: The trick seems to work as long as you can tell Word to find a certain format as in Step 2 (whether through the easy way or the hard way), and as long as you have a corresponding HTML code to put in the "Replace With" box; one thing I found was that sometimes Word seemed sulky after I tried to do two different formatting steps in a row; I just saved, closed and re-opened and it seemed to be more willing then. Other times it would do a bunch of different HTML codes in a row, without complaint.

Here are some other codes that might be helpful:
  • Bold:
    • "Find What": CTRL plus B | "Replace With": ^&
  • Center:
    • "Find What": CTRL plus E | "Replace With": ^&
  • Align Right:
    • "Find What": CTRL plus R | "Replace With":
      ^&
  • Underline:
    • "Find What": CTRL plus U | "Replace With": ^&
  • Superscript:
    • "Find What": CTRL plus + | "Replace With": ^&
