Do you have a charity auction thing due you’ve been putting off? Are you eyeing a big bang suspiciously? Does your to-do list depress you? Is there a thing you would like to be doing, only you just cannot seem to make it happen?
Meet BOB, the month-long motivational marathon of productivity, running this April here at
hd_writers.
The Deal: Every week for a month, we the BOB mods will post targets. Meet them, exceed them, wait for next week, it is up to you what you make of them, but for every page of text you produce, for every hour you spend working to achieve your goal, you’ll be awarded points. Er. Internet points. For your team. Then at the end of the month, there’ll be a party post of winners and some sort of celebratory master list. And shit will be done. \o/
ETA: Team posts are now up. Find your team's Common Room and get organized. Don't have a team yet? Check out the descriptions below and join the one that suits you best in their Common Room post.
Team Acromantula |
Team Snidget |
Team Hinkypunk |
Team BillywigBut wait, isn’t that just a Word War with points? Yes and no, mostly no. Your team can and should be the extra poke to motivate you, should you need it. It can also be a place to brainstorm and squee and vent, because your team members are all facing the same challenges you are and at the end of the day, we’re all in it together.
Okay, so how does this work? Pick a team from the selection provided below, or ping a mod to start your own if you think we’re missing something. In a few days when we’ve got the team posts up, stop by and get settled. Introduce yourself, get to know your team. Get ready for April 1.
At 12:01 a.m. April 1 in your time zone, BOB starts. Write, record, draw, edit, research, do whatever it is you need to do to get shit done. Check in with your progress in your team post before you go to bed Sunday nights. Check the weekly tallies posted Tuesdays to see how your team’s doing. Keep going until 11:59 p.m. April 30 in your time zone, when BOB ends. Make your last check-in by noon EST May 1 to be included in the overall points stats. Join us for a party post of victory when it’s over and get your name on the final master list.
And that’s it. The whole deal. Pretty easy, huh? \o/
The Teams: In the comments to this post, you’ll find teams of Magical Creatures which roughly correspond to the types of projects you might be working on. Find the one that suits you best and leave a reply to that comment. join them in their Common Room.

Team Hinkypunk |
Team BillywigIn a few days, when we know how many teams we’re looking at, we’ll put up a post for each of the teams Team posts are now up, so you can get to know your teammates and decide on the team name you’d prefer. Choose wisely, guys, because this is what you’ll be seeing for a month.
Use your team post for anything you’d like. Swapping research links, cheerleading other BOBbers, asking questions, whatever, just make sure you check in with your weekly totals in your team post by Sunday night. (Okay, technically your stats mod probably isn’t checking until noon EST Mondays but anything posted after the weekly cut-off comment won’t be included in the weekly standings stats.)
Please note: team scores will be averaged by the number of participants each week, so there is no disadvantage to teams with fewer members. There’s no penalty for missing a week, either, though we’re sure your team wants you and your pretty points back to help them get ahead.
The Points: All made up, points don’t matter, except for how they totally will. Why? Because they work like House Points, folks, and we’re keeping individual stats for awards when we’re done.
Two Pointers
* 250 words of new text
* one half-hour of podfic editing
* one half-hour of line art
* one half-hour of colouring
One Pointers
* 250 words of betaing someone else's text
* 250 words one half-hour of revising your own text
* one hour of brainstorming, plotting, researching
* one half-hour of recording podfic
* one half-hour of preliminary sketching
* one hour of cheerleading/helping someone else achieve their goal
* one hour spent directly achieving your goal in some way not covered by the above
The Finishing Bonus
Earn 1 bonus point per 1k of finished text, whether it was written new during BOB or not. Finishing a 2k comm challenge fic will be worth 2 points; finishing a 25k big bang fic will be worth 25 points. Artists, podficcers, and betas will earn 1 finishing bonus point per hour of production. Works can be combined to make 1k/1 hour.
Bonus Days: Exactly what you think. We’ll randomly announce a day each week when everything is worth double points. Collect your bonus points by checking in on that week’s bonus post. Please include your team name so we can add your total to your team’s weekly tally.
Reporting: Check in with your total productivity on your team’s post so we can award your points. Mods will post a cut-off comment as per the timeline listed above and everything reported before then will be included in your team’s tally for the weekly stats and awards, but don’t worry if you miss it; we’ll still add your work to your team’s overall stats. Bonuses must be reported in the relevant Bonus post to be counted and should be included as a separate list when you check in for the week.
Your check-in post should look something like this, assuming you’re working on fic:
1,500 new words
3 hours brainstorming/researching
90 minutes revising
BONUS: 500 words, 1 hour of brainstorming/plotting
FINISHED: 3k fic
Word counts will be rounded up to the nearest 250 mark as long as they’re more than 100 words above the previous 250 mark. Writing 568 of new words will be considered 500, whereas writing 601 will be worth 750. Times will be rounded up from 15 minutes, so 44 minutes of work will be worth a half-hour while 47 minutes of work will be worth a full hour. Feel free to do this rounding yourself.
All of that, when processed through what we’ll be calling curi’s spreadsheet o’doom, gives us:
6 points new words
3 points b/r
3 points revisions
10 points bonus
3 points finish
= 25 points for the week.
The Master List: If you’re working on a project you can post during April or early May, submit a link to the BOB mods and we’ll include your work in a master list of BOB-related projects. If you’re working on an anon work, or one that hasn’t started posting yet, submit your sign-up username and the name of the comm you’ll be posting to eventually so we can include you in a master list of BOB participants and shit they got done.
FAQs
What does BOB stand for? Nothing. The mod team let me name it. Things went downhill from there.
What if I miss a week? No worries. We’re averaging team tallies based on the number of participants reporting in for the week so if life happens and you miss one-or two or whatever-no harm, no foul. Obviously the goal here is to get shit done, though, and your team’s going to miss you and your pretty points, but as long as it is still April where you are, it is not too late to jump in. Or back in, as the case may be.
I am working on a thing that is not HD. Can I still play? Totally, yeah. Doesn’t have to be HD, doesn’t have to be Potter fandom, doesn’t even have to be fannish. Think of this as a chance to start working your way through your to-do list.
What if I have more than one project to work on this month? Bluntly, BOB don’t care. Do as many things as you want, the more, the merrier. There’s even a bonus for knocking things off your to-do list, if it helps.
I signed up for Team X and now I’m writing Y. Do I need to switch teams now? Please don’t? Official team assignments from the modly end won’t happen until the first time you check in on a team’s post. Until then, you’re free to choose any team you want, whether you’re working on the same sort of project as your team mates or not. Once you’ve reported your progress on a team’s post, we would strongly prefer you continue with that team. (That sound you hear is your stats mod weeping quietly in a corner, btw.) If you honestly feel staying with your current team will adversely affect your BOB experience for whatever reason to the point that you are unable to get shit done, please PM a BOB mod.
I’m writing X but I want to be on Team Y. Why can’t I? You can. Join whichever team appeals to you most as the best place for you to spend your month. Play nice with your other team mates; that’s all we ask.
I’m not a comm member but I want to BOB. Is that okay? We’re f-locking the team posts so you’ll want to join to access those.
Gah! I need a bigger poky stick of motivation! Where can I BOB in real time? Is there a BOB hangout? Got you covered. Stop by the comm’s
main chat room on Chatzy if you’ve got something you need to talk out with someone, and swing by our
srs!chatzy room if you’re looking for someone to word war with in real time. Please note: main chat is 18+.
I have questions you haven’t answered. What now? Take it to comments-you’re probably not the only one wondering-or PM a BOB mod:
