Holy crap. So many thoughts are flooding my head right now that all I can manage is "Holy crap". Holy crap. Hmm, or perhaps unholy crap??? Turd Blossom? OK, my head is completely boggled by the backwardsness of Texan law.

Interestingly, I was watching American television this morning and finally put words/thoughts around something I'd been feeling for a while. Watching American commercials (at least those on Buffalo TV stations), I get the feeling that the USA is moving backwards, not forwards. Some small examples - 1) ads for cable or DSL internet like it's a new idea + ads for unlimited dial-up like it's a new idea 2) I saw a Nokia 5190 on an ad today (it wasn't an add for cell phone, but still!). I get this same feeling when I visit the US - I feel like everything there is very old and run down (e.g., the traffic lights). Maybe I should visit NYC, since I assume things look a little newer there. Note that I do not get this feeling in the UK - there things look very old, but not run down.

OK. I really am babbling. Do those of you living in the US feel that things are moving a bit backwards down there? I never thought of Canada as being at the forefront of anything, but I'm starting to feel like we really are (at least vs. the US).

I could never move to Texas and hope that I never ever ever ever have to.

What I notice is not the lack of progress (North Austin is relatively young and affluent, so everything here is new and modern), but how many people are out of the loop. For example, last week our local NBC news show ran a story about how people can help supply shoes to kids returning to school without even shoes on their feet. I'm sure this kind of poverty exists everywhere, but still, no shoes seems so...Dickensian. That should be a 19th Century problem, not a 21st Century problem.
