Round Two: Honorable Mod Mentions

Jan 11, 2012 01:16

We had great pleasure looking through all the amazing fills posted to the community (and plan to continue enjoying ourselves during the amnesty round). We tried to pick out several fills that caught our attention in the Round Two and share them with you.

Honorable Mentions: Round Two
Uprooted (Lord of the Rings) by ancalime8301
Frodo packs up to move to Crickhollow
Why you should check this out: I love the quietness of this piece, the somber introspection of it. It fits the mood of the beginning chapters of Lord of the Rings perfectly: seeming serenity tinged with the feeling of dread, and trials laying ahead. The way Frodo leaves things dear and not so dear to him, and talks himself through leaving his home behind - and the way he has friends to support him in this step. Utterly lovely.

looking for vines and olive trees (The Hour) by ariadnes_string
“Christ,” Freddie said, trying to calculate what immense quantity of drink it had taken to reduce a great slab of military-trained manhood like Hector Madden to such a sorry state.
“Quite,” said Bel.
Why you should check this out: I have a weakness for threesomes and the comfort of the person in the middle. Also, men of certain age who look like pirates.

All In (Suits) by arsenicjade
Harvey wins Mike in a poker game. Now he just has to figure out what to do with him
Warnings:Rape, violence, domestic abuse (a separate issue from the slavery, which I do not consider to be domestic), all issues inherent in slavefic
Why you should check this out: Not only it’s a slavefic of truly amazing proportions, and not only it’s a delicious id-fest, but it’s also a delicately crafted, sensitive, subtle and nuanced story dealing with the balance of power and rebuilding of shattered personality without a single narrative misstep (with the help of huge, intricately written-out and perfectly characterized cast, at that).

How Love Grows (The Last Unicorn) by
ferdelance
Schmendrick keeps dreaming of the Tree, but he doesn't understand why.
Why you should check this out: I love The Last Unicorn, and this is a great follow up to the story and addressing the aftermath and effect on the characters.

Survivor's Guilt (Mirai Sentai Timeranger) by
mariko-azrael
time travel gone wrong, post series
Why you should check this out: So I'm much more familiar with the US adaptation, but I love the Time Force idea and rules, and this was a great story that incorporated the limitations of what they could and could not due, and how they can be affected by a history hundreds of years before their time.

Sore Heads (Bandom) by morganya
Picspam for the prompt Sore Heads
Why you should check this out: I love the picspam-as-story approach; the captions were really funny; and it is very much a pan-bandom effort, pulling in lots of bands as opposed to just one.

Mind the Gap (KAT-TUN (Johnny's Entertainment)) by
notaverse
Jin's day off in London doesn't go according to plan - not that he can remember the plan.
Why you should check this out: The author’s description of how the tightly control calm Jin is trying to maintain even as he realizes just how lost he has become is excellent at building up the tension until the “snap” of comfort. The way the comfort comes is very reasonable fix for the problem. Throughout the fic there are hints of a deeper backstory behind the events yet the author leaves the reader well satisfied.

Robbery (Life on Mars) by wolviecat
In the hindsight, it wasn't the best day for a bank heist
Why you should check this out: Using a comic style to show a glimpse of an event. Lovely use of colour and shadowing.
