BURNS
(Some of these have been loosely interpreted to “burning”)
Title:
Travis saved AlessaArtist:
uyauyacRating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Child Abuse, Child Injury
Summary: Art depicting Travis saving Alessa from the burning house in Silent Hill Origins.
Why You Should Look: It’s really lovely artwork that brings a little more humanity to Alessa and (for me, anyways) reminds me why I adore Travis so much for saving her.
How it Fits: Character is saved from being burned.
Title:
Fire walk with AlessaArtist:
TommyMcGannRating: PG/K+
Warnings: Implied child injury
Summary: Art depicting Alessa (non-graphically) burning from Silent Hill Origins.
Why You Should Look: It’s the colors and how they contrast that really makes me like this picture; Alessa in black and white, and the black around the edge of the picture goes very well with the orange-red of the fire.
How it Fits: Alessa is being injured by the fire burning around her (it’s also a more PG reference to the scene in Origins where she’s being burned alive)
Title:
Burn- The Evil Within inspired pieceArtist:
RachaelthekidxoRating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Injuries/Burns
Summary: A cosplay/photomanipulation of Laura Victoriano and her injuries from The Evil Within.
Why You Should Look: The artist really nailed this one: She looks just like Laura, and she did a great job making the burns look real!
How it Fits: Features a character with burn marks on her face.
Title:
SeparatedAuthor:
1nsomnizacRating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Description/References to Severe Injuries, Body Horror, Non-Consensual Body Modification
Summary: Anakin Skywalker in the moments between being left in the lava and waking up as Darth Vader from Star Wars Episode III.
Why You Should Read: Lot’s of great imagery in here; it really captures the kind of pain, mental and physical, that Anakin would have been in.
How it Fits: The entire story centers on Anakin’s injuries, which largely consist of severe burns.
Title:
FlawedAuthor: Cecilia Ahern
Rating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Violence, Child Abuse, Branding
Summary: Set in a dystopia where one is expected to be perfect in every way, a young girl named Celestine is brutally punished for acting on instinct and empathy to help another person.
Why You Should Read: I adored this book. And part of the reason why I adored it is because… I don’t want to give it away. But the thing is, this is a book that really focuses on the idea that rebelling against the status quo has consequences, and no, you may not be able to escape those consequences just because you’re the hero of the story. I liked this book because it went to places that a lot of YA lit (especially the dystopian kind) hesitates to go.
How it Fits: Those who are deemed “flawed” in this book receive a branding (and by that I mean they are literally burned with a red-hot piece of metal) that marks them as flawed for everyone to see.
Title:
Should've Known BetterAuthor:
hollyandviceRating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Severe Burns
Summary: Sulu suffers some serious injuries after his ship is rigged with explosives (Star Trek).
Why You Should Read: It’s a nice snippet: Not too long, not too short, and features excellent characterization for Sulu and McCoy.
How it Fits: Sulu’s primary injuries are severe burns.
Title:
Words That BurnAuthor:
still_lycorisRating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Strong Language, Alcohol
Summary: Hank and Charles fight (X-Men Cinematic Universe).
Why You Should Read: A nice, heart-breaking little story taking place pre-Future past, that does a great job with Charles and Hank’s characterizations.
How it Fits: Hank becomes burned about halfway through the story.
Title:
Under the monsters skinAuthor:
HappyLeechRating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Description of Injuries (Burns)
Summary: A character study for Laura Victoriano (The Evil Within).
Why You Should Read: It’s short, sweet, and does a great job of peeking into Laura’s head and seeing what’s going on in there.
How it Fits: Laura specifically focuses on the burns she’s received and how they relate to who and what she is now.
Title:
Rescue MeArtist:
SLawhornRating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Injuries/Scarring
Summary: A picture of Ruvik (as Leslie) carrying a badly scarred Laura who is in a vegetative state.
Why You Should Read: The artwork is excellent. Laura in particular looks strangely beautiful despite being bandaged and so badly injured (I love the way the artist did her hair).
How it Fits: Laura is in a vegetative state/scarred because she was in a house-fire. The scars are burn scars.
Title:
BurnsAuthor:
BlacklyraRating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Alcohol, Implied Character Death/Suicide, Burns
Summary: Desmond survives his attempt to save the world. Sort of.
Why You Should Read: For a story whose subject is ‘Desmond survives’, it’s actually pretty heartbreaking. I always admire a story that explores the darker possibilities of survival than assuming it’s going to be rainbows and butterflies.
How it Fits: Part of Desmond’s trauma is from the fact that he’s suffering from extensive burns from his attempt at saving the world.
Title:
skin deepAuthor:
meggannnRating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Burns, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Flashbacks, Mild Gore
Summary: Roy burns Riza.
Why You Should Read: This is a very well-written and disturbing story. It’s a sad, interesting piece that gives a lot of characterization for Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye, and it’ll definitely tug at your heartstrings.
How it Fits: Riza gets burned, and much of the story is concerned with her dealing with the pain.
Title:
Just a Furnace With WingsAuthor:
dragon_algeeeeRating: PG/K+
Warnings: Mass Destruction
Summary: Bofur watches as Smaug attacks Laketown.
Why You Should Read: Short and sad, it takes the funny line from the first movie and makes it a lot more sinister.
How it Fits: Smaug is using fire to destroy the town, which is burning around the dwarves as they escape.
TELEPATHIC TRAUMA
Title:
Bleeding effectArtist:
Absolum TerrorRating: PG-13/T
Warnings: Blood
Summary: Artwork of Desmond suffering from the Bleeding Effect (Assassin’s Creed).
Why You Should Look: Again, lovely artwork, and Desmond looks excellent (and in pain. Which. I mean. This is for an hurt/comfort challenge and so I assume the people reading this rec are into this sort of thing).
How it Fits: The Bleeding Effect basically causes your memories/mind to merge with your ancestor’s somewhat, leading to hallucinations and (literally) bleeding from the nose, so I classify it as telepathic trauma even though there’s a physical component to it as well.
CRUCIFIXION
(NOTE: I am working with the definition of crucifixion that says
“severe and unjust punishment or suffering”.)
Title:
The Sacred Lies of Minnow BlyAuthor: Stephanie Oakes
Rating: R/M (because there are some pretty shocking bits of violence in here)
Warnings: Blood, Violence, Child Abuse (No, really, it’s SEVERE child abuse), Implied Sexual Abuse/Rape of a Child, Murder, Amputation of Limbs
Summary: A young girl escapes a violent cult and lands in juvenile detention. An FBI agent approaches her to learn how the compound was mysteriously burned to the ground and their prophet was killed.
Why You Should Read: This is a really good book. It hooked me from the summary and I finished it pretty quickly, because it was one of those “I’m doing some light skimming not because I’m bored, but because I’m desperate to find out how this turns out” books. Minnow is a very sympathetic and complex character, and I enjoyed reading the book with her as the narrator.
How it Fits: Minnow… She suffers pretty severely and unjustly. I don’t want to give too much away for the plot, but this is definitely a book that spends a lot of time explaining how Minnow has suffered and how she tries to move on from her trauma.
Title:
Diary of a Haunting: PossessionAuthor: Amy Ross (Under the Pseudonym ‘M. Verano’)
Rating: R/M
Warnings: Descriptions of Torture, Violence, Blood, Disturbing Imagery (IIRC there’s a picture or two of dead animals in this book)
Summary: A young woman’s online diary, left behind after her death, reveals her long, terrifying ordeal with a supernatural force that causes her a great deal of pain, misery, and fear.
Why You Should Read: This is one of those definitely-should-not-have-read-at-night books. This author is exceptionally good at writing horror in a way that makes you genuinely unsettled, and Laetitia (the main character) is a wonderfully developed and unique character whom you’ll find yourself sympathizing with extensively.
How it Fits: Laetitia suffers a great deal in this book. In fact, though I’m going with the “severe/unjust suffering” definition of crucifixion here, there’s, uh… Well, again, no spoilers, but there’s actually some degree of religion mixed in with the supernatural aspect of this book.
