Chapter 29 -- The Phoenix Lament

Jul 06, 2006 12:03

In which Fleur shows class, Tonks makes a scene, Harry is stupid, selfish and insensitive, and we are told repeatedly that Gandalf Rasputin Dumbledore is DEAD.

Also, there is an abundance of swooning, continuity is deader than James and Lily, and I quote Monty Python. )

Loved the "Dead Parrot Sketch" filk. Bravo.

"... I don't think [Snape] knew they were coming."

This is illogical.

I think it fits. Draco clearly wanted Snape to stay far away from his little venture, and Voldie was doing his best Dumbledore imitation by leaving the killing of The Only Wizard You-Know-Who Ever Feared to a 16 year-old. Really, if Draco didn't want to tell Snape the DE's were coming, how would Snape know?

Moreover, since the other Death Eaters weren't holding [the Hand of Glory], wouldn't they have been as much in the dark as anyone else?

I have this picture of a conga line in my head, everyone holding onto the shoulders of the person in front, Draco leading. Maybe even singing:

We're going to kill Dumby!
Hey!
We're going to kill Dumby!
Hey!
We're going to kill Dumby!
Hey!

Might just be me.

I'm starting to feel bludgeoned by JKR's insistence that Dumbledore is dead, do you hear me, DEAD!

Yet half of fandom is still convinced Dumbledore is just faking it. What's an author to do?

Oh, that wasn't what I meant. I was talking about Minerva blaming herself for Snape's actions being illogical.

Frankly, I would have just stated he was dead once, maybe twice, and had all the characters react to his death with varying degrees of grief, unhappiness, anger and shock. That would have made far more sense.

I love the idea of the conga line!

Ah. Sorry. I'll give that reading comprehension thing a try. I hear there are some benefits.

I remember Prof. X dying in the X-Men comics, leaving a clearly-identifiable body, and being buried, and still coming back. Considering how often miraculous resurrections have been retconned, I understand why people still think Sirius is coming back.

Is it Aberforth? At one time I was convinced it was Voldemort. Does it mean DD's alive and well and pulling pints in the Hogshead? Aberforth! Is this idea widespread in fandom or is it gehayi's own evil invention?

Wide-spread. Possibly evil. gehayi's invention? No, it's about as ubiquitous as those who figured out what R.A.B. stands for.

Also, a quick Google search or two reveals that quite a few people believe it.

I don't, really. If Aberforth was a stand-in for Albus, it would explain Albus's OOCness but not:

A) Fulfil the requirements of the Unbreakable Oath.
B) I actually don't have a second point.

It's unfortunate, because it would also explain why Albus is acting like such a dumbass.

A) Fulfil the requirements of the Unbreakable Oath.

Er...why wouldn't it? Here are the conditions of the Oath:

"Will you, Severus, watch over my son, Draco, as he attempts to fulfill the Dark Lord's wishes?"

"I will," said Snape.

::

"And will you, to the best of your ability, protect him from harm?"

"I will," said Snape.

::

"And, should it prove necessary... if it seems Draco will fail. . ." whispered Narcissa (Snape's hand twitched within hers, but he did not draw away), "will you carry out the deed that the Dark Lord has ordered Draco to perform?"

There was a moment's silence. Bellatrix watched, her wand upon their clasped hands, her eyes wide.

"I will," said Snape.Snape carried out the deed that the Dark Lord ordered Draco to perform--killing Dumbledore at Hogwarts. It's not HIS fault that the Dumbledore at Hogwarts was a Polyjuiced replacement ( ... )

I can see a horcrux hunt where Harry finds every time that someone else got there before him and left a cryptic note. D'you know, I think JKR is probably as bored of horcruxes as everyone else by now so Harry just won't bother. Hmmm, he could just cut the Gordian knot and eat Voldie...

Couldn't Harry just kill Voldemort and THEN find the horcruxes? I mean, sure, we'll have Vapormort floating about again, but that's rather less dangerous than having Tommy running about killing people. Harry would have fifteen years or more to find the things, especially if he scampers off to get rid of all those inconvenient bones of the father first.

I just thought that magic wouldn't be thrown off by little things like, "Kill A. Dumbledore? I'll pretend you meant Aberforth Dumbledore ..."

That'll teach Voldie not to text orders to the Death Eaters!
