It was one year ago this weekend that universal love of Harry Potter books and their author was unexpectedly and irreparably wrecked and ruined. It was probably also the first time fans returned a HP book, and JKR got hate mail, hate, and accused of being a very poor writer.

Is that what you were thinking? I remembered because we had an annual swim meet this weekend, and it was at last year's meet that I, along with dozens of other parents, were sitting there reading HBP while waiting for our kid's next event.

It's been a very rough year for HP fandom. I wonder what the next year will be like. Maybe it's just because it's summer, but things seem to be slowing down as if people just don't care anymore, or don't have anything else to say about it anyway. All that's left is to wait and see what HP7 brings us; redeeming twists, which I strongly suspect and hope for, or more distasteful garbage. I don't think she can write 7 fast enough for any of us.

And if book 7 makes everything all right again, then it was the anniversary of proving that if you’re going to trick readers, you best do it all in one book or they won’t enjoy it at all.

And if book 7 makes everything all right again ...

I find myself, over time, growing slightly more hopeful that a) the 7th book might turn out to be OK, and b) it might turn out to be H/Hr after all. Or, at the very least, have a believable romantic element in it - if there is one - something I can enjoy, that will satisfy me. Like a lot of the fan fiction out there that proved superior to HBP.

But I can't see how she can do it without making HBP even more farcical than it was. And even if the H/G 'monster' can be explained away, how can the belittling/destruction/eradication/whatever-call-it of Hermione's character be justified?
