And my first thought was, "Crap. Madame Pince found my NC-17 non-con slashfics."

This is exactly how my boyfriend reacts when he catches me dog-earing my books. He borrows things I've had for years, and meticulously uses a bookmark, sneering at me each time he does so. Even on the ones I've dropped in the tub, etc. I always worry that he's going to pass out when he sees me reading a text for a class with a highlighter and a pencil (which I totally do to cheap paperback copies of Harry Potter books. I try to keep those out of his sight).

It's MY books, so far as I'm concerned. And I can't read non-fiction without a pencil, because I scribble notes about what's in particular paragraphs to make them easier to find.

I feel more justified becuase historical manuscripts with marginalia and notes by readers are more useful than untouched manuscripts - the used ones give us an idea of how the people in period read the texts, as opposed ot how we read it now with our modern sensibilities.
