-----------------------------------------------------

Littlefinger knows how to manipulate people, it's his speciality. He uses various techniques from reverse psychology to finding out what his victims weaknesses are, to destroy the people that surround him. So when Lord Eddard Stark began to 'trust' him to some degree, he already knew how to strengthen that trust to eventually bring the noble Lord to his knees.

"Distrusting me was the wisest thing you've done since you climbed off your horse"

Reverse psychology. Honourable Ned would never believe that a man would be so bold to reveal his penchant for betrayal, making him more inclined to believe that Lord Baelish would never double cross him. He believed in seeing past his acquaintances' questionable backgrounds if reason showed it to be false or that they have redeemed themselves in some way. Honourable. However, honour will only get you so far until your head is fitted on a spike at King's Landing- where's your honour and noblity then? Lord Stark did not know how to play the game and that is why he paid for his naivity dearly, with his life. When Littlefinger decides to play 'the game' with someone, he does not want them to fail and lose their lives, no. He wants them to prevail and show him that they are true contenders and that they can survive in the game. Stark did not heed his warning and for that it cost his life; Littlefinger's players never take his warnings/hints seriously. One day he believes that someone will come along who is able to play and hopefully win.
